ABC: Top Republican strategists concede House probably lost

David Edwards
Published: Tuesday November 7, 2006

George Stephanopoulos says that his sources in the Republican party concede that they'll most likely lose control of the House to the Democrats. But Republican strategists appear more certain that they will retain control of the Senate.

Stephanopoulos breaks down the numbers, showing exactly why it will be difficult for Democrats to win the Senate.

1. MI? Stephie is grasping to straws here. I agree that the senate has always been
a tough race, but MI polls clearly for Stabenow.

2. Bullshit. The house definitely looks like it will go to the Democrats, BUT
THE SENATE IS TRUELY A TOSSUP, and anyone, especially a republican strategist, is just trying to save face

3. I'll take that (although I think they're wrong about the Senate)...
MO-SEN shows GREAT numbers for McCaskill:
MO-SEN SurveyUSA Nov 6 McCaskill (D) 50%, Talent (R) 44%

TN-SEN is tightening for Ford:
TN-SEN SurveyUSA Nov 6 Corker (R) 51%, Ford (D) 46%
TN-SEN Polimetrix Nov 6 Corker (R) 51%, Ford (D) 46%

VA-SEN - Allen is TOASTY-O's:
VA-SEN SurveyUSA Nov 6 Webb (D) 52%, Allen (R) 44%

MT-SEN - Sen. "Shhh-Secret-Plans-for-Iraq" Burns is also looking pretty bad:
MT-SEN Gallup Nov 6 Tester (D) 50%, Burns (R) 41%

I firmly believe we'll take BOTH houses!:bounce::patriot:

5. I'm in Virginia
and I just don't believe there's any way Webb is even close to 8 points ahead of Allen. He might be ahead but not by that much. I hope I'm wrong. I hope Webb crushes Allen.

4. 9:00 AM. Too friggin early to call.
Unless they have some sort of "miraculous, unexpected comeback" in the wings?
Are all these pleas of 'oh drat, we lost' a subliminal GOTV message to the base?

8. Even if we only get the House, it will be a HUGE victory
Remember, two years ago Karl Rove was saying that he created a "permanent Republican majority." Ah, hubris has destroyed men a lot smarter and tougher than Rove. I would be very, very happy with a Dem House, get rid of Man-on-Dog Santorum, get rid of Allen, get rid of Burns and McCaskill wins Missouri. That would be a pick-up of four, which won't get us the Senate, but will get us rid of two of the most odious young Senators in America.
