A pleasant surprise at the poll...YOUNG volunteers |
|
Usually the only people we can get to volunteer are senior citizens, because few other people are able to devote an entire 5:30 am to 8:00 pm day. But my son and I just finished up here in Ned Lamont country, and the checkers there were at least five teenagers working along with the regular volunteers. And while the lines were pretty long, everything moved quickly and smoothly, no more than 10 minutes total. But it was cool seeing some young people getting involved. I hope they don't wind up thinking it was all for naught!

2. One out of four was a NEW young face.......... |

AND ALSO saw the school I vote at has the elementary grade students voting with paper ballots in their own election. Perhaps THIS elementary school election will improve the current voter apathy with future generations.

I imagine that they don't want to be drafted and sent to Iraq.

4. But I read that in Ohio... |
|
...Blackwell and his minions have replaced many of the long-time poll workers (supervisors, etc.) with college students (perhaps tapped from chapters of the College Republicans?). So, "young" isn't necessarily a good thing in poll workers, if they're put there by evil people for dastardly purposes.

5. We're in a small democratic town, and they close the schools on election day |
|
I'd be willing to bet they're getting some sort of school credit, although my son knew one of the girls, who graduated last year. Also, we pay our "volunteers" about $130 for the day's work, tax-free...not bad just before Christmas.
