Hell Has Frozen Over

I have a right wing friend and former boss who I have been working on over these past six years. Trying to get him to see how bad things have become has been frustrating as he was one of those who, when presented with cold, hard facts, turned away from it. But, since he hounded me about Clinton for years and I always listened and read the books he wanted me to read, I have stayed on him in reverse, often making him irate. He is very religious and believing in Bush has been a matter of faith for him as he dismissed all input from me and from his Republican friends (I know many of them who came over to our side on this long ago).

But then today, as we went to the polls, I opened my e-mail and this short note is what I found from him in response to an editorial I had sent around.

"Not our proudest moments are they.
I felt invading Iraq was wrong -- now I know it -- and how the heck we're going to not leave things worse than they already were is beyond me.
Mea culpa.

This is a hell-freezing-over moment, but it happened.

3. I got a similar e-mail about a month ago

from a very good friend and old Navy shipmate of mine. We had our differences politically but we always got along. He wrote - "I will not vote for any sob with an (R) after his name." This is from a Reagan republican who is a very religious and conservative. bush has pissed him off intensely. dubya made my job very easy.

A repub that I know very sincerely and solemnly wished me luck in today's election. I was gobsmacked. Absolutely gobsmacked.

They're counting on our fiscal sobriety. Our honesty. Our common sense. Our maturity. Our decency. Our humanity.

After insulting us and robbing us blind, they're depending on us.

Makes me want to spit, actually.

I am still waiting. I feel like there are a number of people in my personal life who should acknowledge that I have been right about almost all things political these past 6 years or so. In fact the only thing I was wrong about was the degree to which this admin was capable of screwing up. They are always far, far worse than I expect.

On the plus side, my rock-ribbed repub inlaws were planning to vote for Webb last I heard, so maybe hell is freezing over.
