I will be happy with one vote majority in the House...
even if we lose the Senate. Naturally, it would be icing on the cake if we could win both Houses of Congress. However, the Repubs are more organized than we are at getting out the vote. That was obvious in the last election, in spite of all the arguments about Ohio...

Realistically, the only thing the Democrats could do, if they win the House, is oversight. Don't get me wrong, that is no small matter, especially in these times. But oversight will be made very difficult, I suspect, by this Bush White House. He does not plan on changing anything, no matter if the Congress goes Democratic. He will challenge the Democrats at every turn.

So, what should the Democrats do if they win the House? They should play hardball with Mr Bush. Everytime he tries to break the law or run roughshod over the Constitution, the Democrats should call an investigation, with subpoenas and witnesses. Mr Bush gets out of line, call an investigation. Bring out the facts. That might keep him under semi-control for the next two years. But I would not bet on it. He's a dictator at heart. He must be treated as one.

In the final analysis, the Republican Party needs the Democrats to win the House. They need someone to blame for something. They have made such a mess of things. They are probably fearful of what shape the nation might be in two years from now, if they were to maintain control? They really, really need for the Democrats to win.

Yes, it would be nice to win the Senate, so we don't get anymore right-wing judges. It would be nice to see Lincoln Chaffee beaten in RI. It would be nice to see Ned Lamont win in CT, and Ford in Tennessee, and Webb in VA, and McCaskill in MO, and Brown in OH, and Casey in PA. It would be nice to see Burns lose in MT and Kyl lose in AZ. However, that may be too much to ask?

2. T hell with that nonsense
Anything less than an extra 60 House seats will be a pisser.

I can't believe what I am reading here... "....However, the Repubs are more organized than we are at getting out the vote. That was obvious in the last election, in spite of all the arguments about Ohio..."
...

That is pure trash. The Dems had a record turnout in 2004 and the election was stolen. Saying anything else is a gawd damned defeatist attitude, and I am sick of it! It reads just as if it came right from rove's desk!

You ought to be ashamed.

3. Um...
I call outrageous bullshit on your post.

After 2000, 2002 and 2004, all I want is a return to basic checks and balances.

That isn't defeatist.

If we win and only have a one-seat majority, I'm going to be the happiest bastard on the planet.

So cool your jets.

4. You may be happy
But I'll be damned if I'll settle for second best.

Face it, if this country doesn't do an about face bushco will rule.

To say, as the OP did, that we are second best to the Publicans in all the political fields of operation is trash talk - I don't like it and I'm damn sick of reading it on my DU.

I'll not cool my jets. In fact, I'm putting on the afterburners. And I'll soon be leaving here to get back to working the polls. Where do you want to be?

10. Hate to break it to you
but it isn't "your" DU. Or mine. Or anyone's.

It's ours.

Cope with conflicting opinions.

12. I'm coping
It is the defeatist attitude that I refuse to "cope" with. Cope means to shape around another object. In this case that object is an idea. I'll not shape myself to what I feel is a defeatist attitude.

Dems won the 2004 election. And 2000. But some people just can't cope with that, eh?

5. Well, don't count your chickens. The Dems have yielded to GOP bullying which
scares the shit out of me.
I'm sure it will be happenning again.

The Bush/Cheney regime are a serious group of gangsters that destroy at all costs.

8. All I'm saying is...

it is of paramount importance that we put some brakes on this radical regime now in the White House. Yes, I would love to win the House and Senate. However, it the House is in Democratic hands, even if only by one vote, they have the power to subpoena and to investigate. However this election comes out, we will know a lot about where we stand and where we need to go. Obviously my attempt to temper any desperation or depression if we don't have a landslide victory failed to work with some folks.. :)

11. You sure have a funny way
... of trying to temper things.... as if you are the keeper of the tempers!

No, what I read in your OP was just as if it came off rove's desk. Basically you wrote that Dems are losers. God Dammit - we WON! Dems are the real WINNERS!

Mine is a winning attitude. And it's backed up with solid facts.

I've been here since May of 2001, and one name that has always been a must-read for me is kentuck, who as much as I can recall, has been here at least as long as me. We don't always agree, but as a DUer, kentuck is the gold standard, and has been for a very long time.

Simply put: kentuck is the very very very last person who deserves to be a receptacle for your self-righteous spleen-venting. Give it a rest.

15. Don't ever worry about asking for too much
Republicans have made a tradition of asking for too much, mostly to line their pockets. I say THINK BIG. It's always good to make a bastard cry (or at least whine a little).
