17. It's just that the Repukes have been complaining about Cook
Cpunty since Kennedy beat Nixon. I bet "The Untouchables" was no longer in prime time when you were a kid.

I'm not trying to be crass... I'm just over 70 posts til I reach 5000! Wonder If I make it before the election is over!! I don't think I will... have some work to get done and the hours are waning!

6. Nope, just not a resident of Illinois. I live in the Southeast not the Midwest.
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 03:22 PM by CottonBear
I live in Georgia, which has the second most counties of any state except Texas. I have a hard enough time keeping up with Georgia! I have only been to Illionois once and that was in 1977 when I was on a High School museum trip to Chicago.

I've been to Chicago. It's a great city! I can't wait to go back one day.

5. This is getting frickin' ridiculous.
They honestly want us to believe that Diebold, who make the ATM machines that work 24/7 in all weathers and temperatures, while keeping accurate account of withdrawls, deposits, account balances, cellphone credits and whatall else, can't make a machine that accurately registers a few thousand votes during a twelve hour period on one day?

Bullshit.

28. Well ...

I see what you're saying, but as a person who has the unfortunate duty of babysitting one of these monstrosities that takes care of certain kinds of customer accounts, I'll note that they breakdown regularly, count and report things incorrectly, etc. It's just not something that gets advertised.

These machines being used for voting is just absurd beyond words.

31. I wonder if Diebold made the ATM that gave my friend
$560.00 He wanted $500.00 and received $1160.00, but his receipt read $500.00, so he kept it. He wanted to give it back. Of course, I told him not to. LOL

12. I don't know. I live in a different county. I'm South of Cook County.
It sounded like the long line was because of a malfunction in the machines.:(

16. Its official. We live in a third world country
There is no excuse for any of this other than pure thievery, trickery and chicanery.

ATM machines work.

But we can't get a system to do simple arithmetic every couple of years?

27. WBBM is reporting two precincts in Cook will be open late
A Cook County Judge ordered two suburban polling places to remain open late -- the 7th Precinct polling place, at 1909 S. Laramie Ave. in Cicero; and the 92nd Precinct at 200 Glenwood/Lansing Road in Glenwood will remain open until 8 p.m., Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Marcy Jensen said. The two precincts opened about 90 minutes late this morning.

There was also a huge problem with the pens, there weren't any at my polling station.

35. The problem is lack of training, familiarity
Basically Cook County received a bunch of new machines this year. Many precincts (my own included) used punchcard butterfly ballots for years.

During the primaries, it became rapidly clear that no one had any idea how to run the things. So, the county tried to implement a more vigorous training regimen for election workers to avoid problems.

Well of course, the general election has much higher turnout to aggravate things, many people have never voted on anything but the old punchcard ballots, the election workers themselves may not be sure, etc. etc. etc.

Simply put, Cook County and others in the area knew this was going to be a massive clustermuck going in. I'd not be surprised to learn they'd drawn up the requests for extensions before Election Day. Everyone saw this coming.
