DU ADMINS! PLEASE take the GOOGLE ADS down!
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 03:23 PM by Texas Explorer
As a subcriber to DU, I have the privilege of not having to see Google Adsense trashing Democrats on election day.

(For those of you who don't have a star indicating you've donated to DU, please check this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2602842)

I am a webmaster of several websites that together fall way short of the traffic experienced by DU. I also have Adsense. I'm taking Adsense of of all my sites right NOW!

Do you really need the income generated from those ads only to send the clicker to democratssuck.com?

Also, if you have to meter the site tonight, taking the ads down will help with site access issues. In fact, you might consider taking down all third-party ads and put donation requests in their place.

3. In my preferences page, I check to not display the ads, but
they still show. Is there another way to turn them off?

7. You can only turn them off if you are a member but non-members
are still having to see offensive Google ads. All I'm asking is that DU at least temporarily turns off the ads for all users.

10. Firefox + Adblock
How many times do I have to say this when the topic comes up for people to actually listen?

2. I haven't witnessed any of these offensive ads.
The only ads that I have seen are for an Eco-friendly toothbrush and for the Washington Post.

I don't know why they bother people so much.

5. Does anyone really look at the ads anyway?
There are bigger fish to fry today.
I'm worried more about the elections than an ad I wouldn't click on anyway.

6. Just block out the offending ads on your own site.
That is what the "competitive ad filter" is on your AdSense admin page. Google isn't personally picking out offensive ads to serve up; they're based upon the content of the page. So what...take the other jerks' money and click. If you're a DU donor, you shouldn't be seeing them anyway, unless you set your preferences that way.

13. I'm not seeing the ads. I have them turned off. Non-members,
however, have no choice.

I realize I can filter the ads in Adsense control. My move to remove Adsense from my sites is based on my belief that Google has become untrustworthy and I have decided to boycott Adsense in personal protest.

You are correct that DU, in lieu of taking Adsense down, can also filter offensive advertisers, which would be fine with me.

8. If DU makes money with every click on these ads, then just click on the
offending ad and kiss it up to DU.

12. Seriesly, they'll be pissed!
The advertiser can see where his clicks are coming from, and I imagine he'll be none to happy about having to PAY for clicks from DU. LOL! But there isn't a damned thing he can do about unless he specifically enters DU as a site he doesn't want his ads to appear on...which he obviously hasn't done.

15. Well, you have to also be careful not to spam Adsense in such
a way because it could get DU banned from the Adsense program for fraudulent clicks.

16. Yeah, you're right.
I was just recalling the TOS from when I signed up. You're expressly forbidden from soliciting clicks, and doing so could cause your account to be canceled. But what about this situation? It isn't Skinner doing it...just some random readers!

Good point, though. So don't click, people...just ignore the ads, or drop Skinner a ten-spot and enjoy DU ad-free.
