Will There Be Any Release Of Exit Polls At All? |
|
After the polls close, but before all precincts report in with counts, will there be any indication via exit polls or do we just have to watch the totals add up all night?

4. Here is the deal with the exit polls according to the Political Wire: |
|
"About the Exit Polls A consortium that includes the Associated Press, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News and NBC News hired Edison/Mitofsky to conduct exit polling nationwide. To prevent leaks, extraordinary security measures are in place. Analysts from each organization will essentially be locked in a room from 12pm until 5pm to analyze the data as it comes in. No communication with the outside world is allowed.
If the past is a reliable indicator, expect to see exit polls leaked sometime after 5pm. As the Wall Street Journal notes, "If all goes well, only when they emerge from their cloisters will the legions of ravenous political bloggers have any chance of getting their hands on the earliest indication of which party will end up controlling Congress."
That said, don't expect the leaked results to mean very much. Polls are polls, and in close races they're not going to tell us that much we didn't already know. They are subject to the same random sampling errors and they do not pick up early or absentee voting. In every single race this year, we've seen leads shift back and forth. One more snapshot on Election Day isn't likely to be that meaningful.
The real value of exit polls actually comes Wednesday morning. Since they are the only polls we have of people who actually voted, exit polls can tell us why they voted the way they did. "
