In the deep south, folks are just too laid back for those new-fangled gadgets. Down here, we keep it simple. Tradition matters, with us and so does money. Why waste all that cash that Republicans in power need to make yacht payments and such?
When I went to vote at the same polling place that gladly took my vote a few months ago, they simply told me to go vote somewhere else. According to the people working the polls, I was no longer on the roll. Make no mistake, three months ago, I made very sure that everything was in order at the Registrars Office, after spending so many years out of state. I should have known better than to vote in the Democratic primary. In Alabama they allow voters to participate in the opposition's primary and then cross-over in general elections. I even thought about cross-voting to unseat local incumbants and more easily elect Democrats. When I finally had ballot in hand, though, I felt like a DU Troll, so I voted my heart.
Well, to make a long story short, I drove the fifty miles one-way to slide my paper ballot through a machine. It was so fast and easy that writing this feels like I'm creating a TV commercial. For once in my life, I voted a straight ticket with one little mark on top of the ballot. With all that time saved by not carefully reviewing candidates, like years past, I considered fixing some missing ink on the Democratic logo but with that big black elephant under it, I saw no reason to worry with fixing our tattered little donkey.
I would have crawled the fifty miles through broken glass to vote on a damned Diebold machine this year to do my civic duty. In years past, it seemed such a chore. Back then, I voted when there was extra time in my busy schedule. Have you ever wondered how it feels for people in other countries to vote, after they unseat a dictator or over-throw a tyrant? Maybe, for the first time in my life, I got a taste of how others feel when they get a snowflack's chance in hell to rise above oppression.
By the way, did you vote?
