1. Fleming couldn't compete with Trent Lott's name recognition and money power.
And he couldn't match Trent Lott's $2,000,000 war chest. Unfortunately, it wasn't much of a race.

I heavily suspect that most of Fleming's votes came from poor Blacks, while most Whites voted for Lott. I may be just cynical though.
