Chafee Should Have Pulled A Lieberman
If he had run as an Independent or ran as a Dem, he would have won.

1. I think he actually (surprise!) has a greater sense of ethics and fairness to go that route. n/t

2. He would have had to switch
Before the beginning of the year.

If he had gone independent two years ago, when he should have, he'd still have a job.

If he weren't an R, I would have voted for him.

Though I like Sheldon now more than I did a few months ago. Sheldon's a huge fricking goofball and I love, love, love that about him.

I liked both our choices, and Jack Reed, the other Rhode Island Senator is my all time favorite Senator.

I'm happy in RI tonight. Now if we can only get rid of our asswipe of a governor!

3. Chaffee is a man of conscience. He knew that the RI GOP had supported him and he needed to be
square with his political beliefs. Of course, he is a New England Republican, and many of those are alot like Dean Democrats. He's against the war, hates the insane spending, and is left of many Democrats.

It's just that "invoking party discipline" matter that caused him to lose, where the party leader arm twists for ugly little votes...especially procedural votes. See, the real reason he lost is because he would have voted for a GOP Senate leadership. That's the ONLY reason he lost, really.

In any other circumstance, he would have been returned, simply because he IS a man of integrity. But every vote counts, and the point just HAD to be made. We don't want a GOP-run Senate.

4. Good analysis

Lincoln Chafee is a fine, fine man and even as a Liberal Dem I feel very bad for him tonight, because he represents so much that is good, but we had to go after him...we had no choice. Had he came to our side in 04 or 02 he'd have probably gotten 90% of the vote today. Lincoln's loyalty did him in, but his loyalty was to a dying beast. Best of luck to him in the future.
