Abortion ban trailing early
By Kevin Woster, Journal Staff Writer

Referred Law 6, the controversial near-total ban on abortions, appeared to be losing as early returned came in from general-election voters Tuesday evening.

With about 11 percent votes counted statewide, Referred Law 6 was losing 44 percent to 56 percent.

But a leader in the battle against the law said it was too early to celebrate.

“It’s way too early,” said Jan Nicolay of Chester, co-chairwoman of the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families. “There are so many variables. It depends on what precincts are in. It’s just too early to say anything, except that we hope it stays consistent.”
