I lay here in New York city in tears. |
|
It's late and as a student at New York University I need to wake up early in morning. However, tonight I am in tears. I remember in 2000 when I was the 7th grader in Orange County, California who was the lone student in my entire class to side with Gore in our class presentation on who should become president. Even as a pre-teen I knew something was wrong with the election results. That started my interest in politics. I worked my ass off for Kerry in 2004 going door to door to convince people to vote with someone they considered a communist. I worked last summer upon returning home in the most impoverished areas of Anaheim and Santa Ana to elect Lou Correa and Loretta Sanchez. IT HAS ALL PAID OFF. Tonight is a night to be proud. We have done it. We have overcome election fraud, illegal war, and Christian fundamentalism.
TONIGHT IS OUR NIGHT DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND. Many of you have been in this far longer than I, but this is my first victory... the first time that honesty and the political platform that helps the working people of this country will prevail.
Finally, after six years of walking door to door, I did it... WE DID IT!!!!!
I began this night quoting James Carville in my favorite documentary "The War Room." I said to my friends and family. I'm not going to say anything, but "It looks good."
It looks good tonight for the working people of the United States, for the single mothers, for the people who struggle just to make ends meet. Furthermore it looks good tonight for the parents like mine who wish for their child to go to college and succeed in ways they were never able to themselves.
Tonight is good for all Americans. For the first time in six long years, we can be positive.

Ever since right after 9/11, it's been one outrage after another. One BS-y action from the GOP to another. Finally, after the incompetence, and lying, and misdirection, and patriotism-questioning, things might actually change for the better.
This has been coming for five-plus years now. The Republicans didn't deserve reelection and finally, after (allegedly) voting for a schmuck and his party no less than three times, the American people GOT IT.
I don't expect paradise because of a Democrat-controlled House and (likely) Senate. But anything's gotta be better than then past five years of bitter partisanship. Thank you, American people, and goodnight. Ringo

3. Congratualation to you |
|
for your work and to all of us! It is our night and we have lost more sleep, cried more tears and walked oh so many miles for this night. You have something very special to have stood up for democracy, for our country, for right from wrong as a 7th grader. It's easy, especially at that age, to go with the group but in your heart you not only knew but believed. Thank you, you are the future, our future and it makes me feel good to know that young people like you will be there.

5. I also realized Bush was a scumbag in 7th grade |
|
I was in 7th grade when that act of thuggery known as the South Carolina primary happened against McCain (I didn't follow politics much, but I wanted McCain to be President because I liked his "Straight Talk" image.) I saw Bush as a spoiled brat who brought his way through the primary, and I decided that I wanted Gore to win based on that. I still have memories of Florida, although I had the feeling that the media really wanted Gore to concede, even though he was getting screwed over (I was pessimistic about Gore's chance's of getting a recount because of that.)

In 2003, 2004, I remember thinking things might never improve, that we would go down the path of fascism ever farther.
Relief. Such Relief.

Your post makes me glad I have stayed in this fight for America. It is for young people like you that I have never given up.
Yeah, we all need some sleep. And when we do, it will be deep and restorative.
It is a good night for working people, people who struggle.
It is a good night for the entire world.
We have put the knife on a cancerous threat in America. I am damn happy to have you on our side in this battle. I am proud to have you as an ally.
You young people are the saving grace.

We have created a firewall of our, finally. You will have many nights like tonight and many nights like 2004 too. But, you know what it takes to make it happen and that will be with you always.
Congratulations. You remind me of myself when I was working for McGovern, at 14, all those years ago. I have never given up and I don't want to see you ever give up either, even when it is darkest. For, there are nights like tonight to keep you going!
Thanks for all your work. The future belongs to you.

Without young people like you who gave their time and energy, we wouldn't be where we are this morning. Your demographic is the most Democratic (18-24) of all. Don't lose the vision of what this country can be and was intended to be!

I was in 3rd grade in 1993-1994. We all had to pick a President to do a report on and for whatever reason I chose John F. Kennedy when the other kids were picking Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Reagan, H.W. Bush, and Clinton. I choose Jack Kennedy and after reading his story and seeing how much he was loved and respected and that he helpped get Martin Luther King, Jr. out of jail when Nixon didn't I choose to be a Democrat like JFK.
My first election I paid attention to was the 1994 midterms. We all know how that turned out. Watching Dan Rather report on all these losses for my new party that night was heartbreaking. I guess Clinton's re-election in 1996 has been my only election to see my team win. But after 10 long years (and the last 6 the worst of those 10 years) I finally saw my party win and win big.
In the words of Jackie Gleason: "How sweet it is!"

18. Today I Have No Repugnicans Representing Me! |
|
Maybe when I was a little kid, I have never experienced that. Every major and minor office from Governor to both Senators to Congresscritter to State House & Senate...all Democrats! What makes this more amazing was when I move to this area 25 years ago, my wife and I were some of the few Democrats in the area. One year we went to the polling place and found no booth set up for Democrats to vote in (primary time)...the poll watcher looked at me and said "We've never had many Democrats around here". Yesterday, 4 of us joined many of our friends and neighbors in voting for Democrats and feeling good about it.
Being a little older I can think of several elections that come close to the feelings I have tonight/this morning. First is 1974...my first election...right after Nixon's resignation and it was payback time for Vietnam and Watergate. Then in '76 to see Carter beat Ford was very gratifying. Next were the '82 elections where Rayganomics was derailed and prevented the right wing from getting too crazy (that would come 20 years later). Finally there was 1992...the last time the Democrats swept both houses...along with Clinton's victory. Just like tonight, it seemed like this nation had made a profound change away from the right. Let's hope this year it's the start of a new 40 years of Democratic House control.
Congrats and Cheers to all...now our work is just beginning.

51-year-old single bereaved mother, somehow inexplicably a bleeding heart liberal anti racist anti sexist peacemongering DEMOCRAT from the age of 5 (i distinctly remember wanting JFK to beat Nixon!) is in tears in hawthorne california.
finally some hope. my 14-year-old son said mom you should not be up. it's almost 5 am and i have been up for over an hour. i had to know: we won yesterday. today is a new day.
hell a lot on the plate: end the WAR. get back habeus corpus. put the criminals where they belong. i hate to be a wet rag, but as encouraged as i am by yesterday's results, i still don't know i got my country back, yet.
peace out

Thank you for all your work. I work 60-65 hours a week, and what with family and chores, I just didn't have time to help out. Reading your post, I'm ashamed I couldn't do more then send money to several candidates.
Once again, you did good kid.
