What a fantastic night it's been! I feel like a giant weight's been lifted, which more than makes up for some of the less than wonderful things happening in my personal life right now.

Was that photo taken anywhere near Mt. Etna? Nathan hiked up Etna week before last when he was there, and he also developed a taste for espresso, Vespas and Dolce & Gabbana.

Send Ben regards from this old veteran (turned 50 on October 4) who is working on a biography of a friend's father, Capt John Finke, who got himself shot in the head while taking on the Nazis just outside of Troina back in 1943 (the helmet, complete with bullet hole, is in the 1st Infantry Division Museum today). He survived with a scalp wound and went on to be the first or second American officer onto Omaha Beach on D-Day. He got through that, too, and much more before retiring from the Army in 1962.
I know that you worry about Ben's safety after all he's been through -- but he looks at it differently. Ben is a good, brave, patriotic guy -- doing what he thinks he must and I know you (and all of us) are very, very proud of him.
Certainly, let's end this war ASAP and get the troops home to their families (I pray tonight's election results will expedite that). But, honestly, I'm glad the USA still has men (and women) like Ben. He shows a lot a character -- more, for sure, than the asswipes who put him into this current situation. But a soldier doesn't get to pick his fights and doesn't battle for God or flag or country. He battles for his buddies and will do anything to keep them alive.
I admire Ben's attitude and his courage. You did a great job raising him -- even if you don't like the path he's chosen or the dangers along that road. My mom worried about her two sons too when we served (even though my brother was a stateside MP and I was a mere Signal Corps dink).
Anyhow, like I said, send Ben my best regards and please know I'm thinking about all of you. I mean that sincerely.
