Open Letter to Republicans (And P.S., Suck It!)

Dear Republicans,

We understand this must be a confusing and frightening time for you. After all, you're the party that invented the Politics Of Fear. You thrive on it, you feed off of it, you can't live without all-terror-all-the-time. We've heard your doped-up radio bloviators screeching about how if we Democrats win elections, we'll immediately start drinking your blood and forcing you to watch Queer Eye. And you are masters of projection, so you tend to assume that anything you privately imagine doing to Liberals, we must also imagine doing to you once we win. (Yes, we even know about the website where the creepy Irma Griese-wannabe calls herself the "Camp Nurse" in her Nazi fantasies.) The thing is, though, we aren't like you. We, the Liberals, the Democrats, even--dare I say it?--the Socialist, do not enjoy the same sort of dark fantasizing you do. We have a bright vision for America.

We envision an America that is strong and respected in the international community. We envision an America that shines with economic prosperity and with courage, an America where a worker gets a living wage, an America beaming with restored civil rights and radiant with optimism. We envision an America where the candle of hope sends its light into the shadows of poverty and despair. We refuse to cower in the darkness and ask Big Brother to protect us from monsters under the bed. We know that daybreak is coming and the sunlight is going to touch even the darkest corners of the room. We see a brighter America coming, and we are working to bring in the light.

What's more, we want it for all of us. Yes, you included.

Step into the light. You don't have to be afraid anymore.
