It wasn't just the media's endless and dishonest replaying of the scream, there was a lot of help from people in his own party, including Gephardt, Kucinich, Edwards, Kerry, and othes, as well as a few other factors. The very short period between the Iowa and NH primaries didn't help either, giving him no chance to recover at all from the Iowa loss, but that too was intentional, by design of the former head of the DNC (and maybe Clinton). And, the campaign itself made a few mistakes, let's not forget.

So there were a number of factors. The Scream was just the one most people saw and would think of as mostly responsible for his demise.

A must read article on Dean is in the Sunday NYTimes about 3 weeks ago. In it you'll find he wrangled with Schumer because Dean controlled the pursestrings of the party, and he insisted we go to ALL states, not just the traditional 'blue' states, which is what Schumer and a few others wanted to do. That was the old strategy, and we see the new 50 state strategy is what we need.
