I've been worried about this ever since I heard Joe LIEberman was so far ahead in the polls - Joe LIEberman cares about nobody but himself...

Joe only has to vote with Dems (Assuming we get MT and VA) for the election of the Senate majority.
After that, all he could do would be to obstruct things by voting with the repukes and getting Cheney's bloated body to cast the deciding vote.
But, how often can they vote for the leadership? Once per session of congress, or anytime they feel like it.
Anyway, I don't think Joe will turn repuke on us... unless he is ready to retire.
And couldn't Conn recall his ass? If I were them I'd get the petition all ready to go.

but who is in the majority in the Senate which determines the head of committees and how the whole damn place runs. If Joe caucuses with us we have the majority and Ted Kennedy becomes head of the jucidiary committee which any Supreme Court nomination has to go through - very very very important since Justice Stevens is apparently ill. If Joe caucuses with the repunks it is tied and the whole committee thing gets a lot more complicated

First and foremost, Lieberman is pro-Israel, even to the extent of putting Israel's best interests before America's in my opinion. A SecDef that would be firmly in the pocket of Israel. :eyes: How many new wars would be generated defending Israel from any imagined threat? I don't think Bush would go that far though, He'd risk alienating even more of his base if he appointed a left-leaning Republican like Lieberman to such a Conservative red-meat position like SecDef.

53. Lieberman can't be appointed SecDef - he's a DEM! They are soft on Terra! |
|
Bu$h painted himself into a corner with this one. He's gone on and on about how the Dems would let the terrorists win. Now whatever WE think of Lieberman, Bu$h's base thinks he is a Dem. If Bu$h were to appoint Lieberman to the Sec Def position, he would be repudiating one of his big talking points.
He would be appointing a Dem to that post - a big problem for his base.
I just can't see even Bu$h being this stupid, even if it would be a backhanded way to even up the Senate.

Folks, it's Pat Buchanan talking. You don't really think he has an inside line with Lieberman, do you? Joe is not going to caucus with the repukes. I've said this before, I'll say it again: My mother, who was very active in dem politics for decades and has known Joe for years, is admament about this, (she voted for Lamont). I'll take my mother's word over Buchanan's anyday.

Republicans don't trust him, Democrats don't trust him (or want him).
It looks like he's kind of...homeless. At least in Vermont they can pull that off--their independents vote with the Democratic caucus.
But Joe? He's just out there flapping in the wind.
He did this to himself.

|
I felt he was railroaded in the Primary, and now he gets to keep his seat and become arguably the most powerful person in the Senate. Both Parties will have to be kissing his butt big-time over the next two years.
But I think, all in all, he will be with the Dems on the issues that matter most. He doesn't seem to be the type of politician to openly take revenge on people who wronged him. (If I were him, I can only imagine what types of games I would be playing right now).
