Pelosi's 100 Hour Plan- THIS Is What America Voted For. She Has A Mandate!
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 09:22 AM by cryingshame
Repeat this over and over DU'ers... Pelosi had a plan just as Gingrich did and it's posted below. The margins were huge. She has a MANDATE!

Day One: Put new rules in place to "break the link between lobbyists and legislation.

Day Two: Enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Time remaining until 100 hours:

Raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, maybe in one step.

Cut the interest rate on student loans in half.

Allow the government to negotiate directly with the pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices for Medicare patients.

Broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds
All the days after that: "Pay as you go," meaning no increasing the deficit, whether the issue is middle class tax relief, health care or some other priority.

3. Day One: She just stated the rules would stay as they are
She said they were rules put into place by the Democrats when they were last in the Majority and that they did not need changing. but the others on the list should be a go from the get go.

46. Enforcement of existing rules would bring huge change
What we've had all this time is three branches of government--and their cronies--that believe that rules do not apply to them. Their attitude all along has been that they don't need no stinkin' laws because they are above the law.

Well, there's a new sheriff in town.

Don't jump on Nancy P before she even gets started.

Hekate

I was just informing people of what I had just heard her say. We will see if she needs to be jumped on by her actions. I have high hopes things are going to remarkably better in America. I know Republicans will say it is all Reagan's policies just kicking in or whatever but the Democrats have always benefited the American people and IMO will continue to do so..

9. I'd LOVE to see Pelosi add revocation of the Alternative Minimum Tax
I know, I know -- it would primarily affect the upper middle class -- but there is a method to the madness:

1) It would affect WAAAAAY more Americans, many of whom lean GOP, than revoking the Paris Hilton Tax (i.e. the estate tax -- hey, if FReepers can call it the "Death Tax"...) -- and co-opt their support.

2) Dems could accurately lay claim to "doing more to lower and abolish taxes" than the GOP

Of course, this should be step one of STEALING the tax issue from the GOP, and adding a plank to the 2008 Democratic platform calling for two things:

-- the abolition ofthe IRS in favor of two smaller agencies, an Office of Receipts in the Treasury Dep't, and an Office of Audit in the Justice Dept.
-- a call to scrap the tax code and appoint a blue-ribbon panel to rewrite it from the ground up.

WTF is Pelosi thinking? We didn't elect a Democratic majority in the House in order to play footsie with the Bush regime.

An attempt to repeal the Military Commissions Act must be in the first 100 hours, not the next.

Just a question - what is to stop the president from Vetoing all this?

Will we have enough to over-ride it, or will there just not be enough in the Senate?

Now maybe Bush will be afraid to veto these things because the people have clearly spoken - but I won't put anything past him anymore.

I'm just afraid to get my hopes up too much.

59. Pelosi has chosen some good issues for the first 100 HOURS.

More time is needed to educate voters about many other issues. I doubt that most Americans are familiar with many of the other issues being mentioned in this thread. The media has not done what it should to educate the public and Democrats have rarely had a chance to appear on talk shows to discuss these issues.

Habeas corpus? How many understand what that is and what has happened?

Warrantless wiretaps? How many understand that warrants are easily gotten through FISA as needed? They've been sold as a way to "find out who Al Qaeda's talking to," playing on Americans' fears.

Warrantless secret searches? Same as with wiretaps.

Fairness Doctrine? Some aren't old enough to remember the Fairness Doctrine, some don't realize we ever had one, others may not realize we don't have one now. ("Well, the opposition party always gets to have a speaker on after the president gives the State of the Union address -- isn't that fair? Why do we need a Fairness Doctrine?")

And so on and so on.

Americans aren't dumb but most watch a little TV news, maybe glance through a newspaper; they don't follow the news like DUers do. They don't trust the media but they don't always realize how much the media focuses on fluff stories, parrots White House press releases, and ignores serious issues.

That doesn't mean Americans don't care. Americans were shocked by the government's unpreparedness and apparent indifference toward helping Katrina victims and refugees. Obviously, a majority have had it with the Iraq war. Many are aware and indignant that our borders are unprotected, cargo uninspected, checked baggage uninspected by airlines while passengers are made to take off their shoes. They know about jobs being outsourced. They know prices are rising faster than paychecks.

It's going to be up to Democrats to educate Americans about the issues they don't know about and to give them more information on the issues they are aware of.

Let the party leaders -- Pelosi, Dean, whoever will lead the Senate -- know what issues we want addressed and ask how we can help educate the public about the importance of these issues.

Also tell them we don't want them being too bipartisan, too cozy with the people who have done away with habeas corpus, approved warrantless wiretaps, etc. We'll have to keep after any Dems wearing pink tutus and let them know we'll work to put another Dem in their seat if they don't work for party principles.

But first congratulate Pelosi on her plans for the first 100 hours of the new Congress. Don't be ungrateful for a good start.
