State by State check in thread! How'd your state/local races turn out?
A mixed bag-o-results here in WI--hard to figure in some ways: Doyle wins pretty easily, but we also get a new, far-right Attorney General. Here in West-Central WI, wingnut douchebags Ron Brown, Dave Zien and Rob Kreibich all lost their seats in the State Senate/Assembly to Dem challengers. But statewide, the anti-gay-marriage amendment and the death penalty both won by huge margins. I'm not sure what it all means--I think a lot of Republicans voted for Dem candidates this time out, and a lot of Dems (sad to say) voted "yes" on the amendment banning gay marriage/civil unions. Weird. But all in all--with the big exception of the gay marriage amendment--the results here are generally positive.

1. From Iowa - AMAZING!!
Chet Culver defeated 8-term Congressman Jim Nussle to succeed Tom Vilsack as Governor
Bruce Braley defeated Mike Whalen to take Nussle's seat back for Democrats in Iowa's First District
David Loebsack defeated Jim Leach to take his seat back for Democrats (and Leach was a lifer in the congress!)
Leonard Boswell won re-election in Iowa's third district

Iowa now has a majority in the Congress 1/2/3 districts are Dem 4/5 are Rep. our Senators are split Grassley - R/Harkin-D :bounce:

Iowa Democrats took the Iowa House (but I don't know by how much) and the Senate (we now are the majority 30-20 from a 25/25 tie!!).

Our new Governor will have a Dem House and Senate to work with.

Oh, and in my little county of the world. TWO hardcore Republicans lost their seats to Democrats so that Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors have a 4-1 Democratic majority!!!

(Only sad note was that we lost one house seat - Don Shoultz - by around 300 votes - bummer).

2. Indiana kicked ass.
We added 3 to the power swap in the house, and our state legislature finally has a (D) next to it again.

4. Repub for governor
State house and state senate still in Republican control and we only turned over two congressional districts (from R to D).

Still, I'm trying to be happy about the national races, and the fact that the Democrats are in charge, rather than wondering why 1/2 of my fellow Floridians are so retarded.

5. Pretty well.
I'm from rural Missouri, and Democrats won the state House AND Senate seat (from my district), the auditor's job, we passed Amendment 2 (stem cell research), we raised the minimum wage.

Jeff Smith (from the "Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?" documentary) is now officially St. Louis city's new state senator.

Overall, things look good.

6. We lost big time...really red here in California & San Diego
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 09:42 AM by MindPilot
Voters authorized the mayor to privatize city services, and the state lost its chance for a SoS who would give Diebold the boot. Right wing pro-biz type for Insurance Commissioner, Gov & Lt Gov. The corruption--rich retirees in SD north county sent Bilbray back to congress--fucking idiots.

California has become a fucking red flyover.

At least we didn't lose any senate seats and Jerry Brown is Atty Gen. But so many of my fellow californians seen to be stupider than dog shit.

7. Mass/RI
I'm right on the border of Rhode Island, so we get mostly RI/Providence news, not MA.

RI: Sheldon Whitehouse (D) took Linc Chafee :D. Whitehouse's campaign was pretty good -- the tagline was "A Whitehouse in Washington you can trust" which I loved. I don't think Chafee really thought Whitehouse was a threat -- his campaign slogan was "Keep Chafee" which always reminded me of those "Never change horses in midstream" ads from Wag the Dog lol. The only seat that went to a Repub was the governor's race, and the Dem challenger put up a great fight.

MA: Gov/Deval Patrick, first black governor of MA, first Dem in 16 years -- very optimistic about Patrick. All other seats went to Dems, but not really that surprising in this area.

Overall, it was a very nice evening.

Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 09:45 AM by bobbieinok
Democrats now hold all state offices except for corporation commissioner.

I don't know about the legislature.

I think we gained a dem House member.

We're still stuck with Sullivan as repub House member from Tulsa area.

12. Still waiting to see results
for Gerlach/Lois Murphy & Fitzpatrick/Patrick Murphy in the Philly suburbs. I googled the CNN site and got an article saying Gerlach won, and midway through I realized it was from their race in 2004! Jeesh. Both Democrats were ahead before I went to bed at 3:30 AM.

17. Michigan just might have a fighting chance to turn around.
Grantholm KICKED De Vos in the nuts. Stabenow KICKED Brouchard in the nuts.

Here in district 04 we are still stuck with Bushbot Camp (R) who has his lips sewed to the Rich in Midland and Traverse City.

The State House has flipped BLUE, and the State Senate may yet do the same. I'm pickin' m'self up off the floor from that one.

The cute li'l white gal ex-homecoming queen and cheerleader got Prop 2 passed, and Affirmative action is toast. Sad. But the dove hunting Prop 3 got handed its head.

That'll do, pig. That'll do.

18. Here in Lake County, IL (Chicago's northern suburbs), I now have a
Democratic State Senator and a Democratic Sheriff. Many of the races that were won by repubics were won 51-49. It's safe to say that this former repubic stronghold is now PURPLE!

 :bounce: :applause:
