Obviously Iraq is something that needs priority handling. But quite honestly, one of the first things I'd like to see reversed is the suppression of civil liberties. The Patriot Act needs to be doused in gasoline and torched! :nuke:

1. first on the agenda should be overturning the Military Commissions Act . . .
just to demonstrate to the American people that we Democrats understand and cherish democracy, and that we will not allow a highly partisan Congress to shit on our Constitution . . .

3. We have to stop the bleeding in Iraq...
It is a never-ending war as it now stands. So long as we're pumping billions per month into that hellhole we can't really solve the other issues.

Once we get a sane Iraq policy, we can fix the other stuff. The R's will be screaming for mercy with Conyers and Waxman holding gavels...we can probably get quite a bit of the ridiculous sh-t taken care of in the first few months like the PATRIOT Act, the MCA, etc. just from twisting the right arms in the HR.

Bush is now officially radioactive and useless.

6. Power of the purse rests with the HR...
and controlling the purse brings a lot of power.

Also, being able to control the Rules Committee in the HR gives the Dems the ability to tie pieces of legislation together. For example, a bill reauthorizing some parts of the Bush tax cuts can be tied to, lets say, a hike in the minimum wage and an increase in Pell Grants becomes the norm.

You want to see Bush break out his veto pen on something like that? It would doom his party for 2008 and tarnish his legacy even worse than it is now.

With this victory, the sane R's with an eye on 2008 will cross the aisle and get sh-t like that passed. They may be loyal to party, but all politicians are first and foremost loyal to themselves. It is the nature of the job.
