To be sure, there's a fairly sizeable number of people here with proto-racist or even racist views, but for many more, it is simply a case of ignorance.

The privately-owned newspapers and radio stations here are pro-business and thus, pro-Republican. Most folks get their news through these outlets.

Tennessee has a Dem governor and a Dem Legislature - no small feat.

We came close to getting our guy elected to the Senate - an African American - and lost by a small margin. A lot of us worked hard even though Ford didn't represent all of our values as Democrats.

We will be a completely blue state - but we still have a little bit left to go, a final stretch. Things look promising.
