Whoa - (lower case l) lib (read: repub) friend in meltdown mode
So - i've got this pal whom i chat with over IM to help pass the day, who claims to be a libertarian but in reality backs pretty much anything the republicans have done. Anyway this morning he is in a total meltdown. Generally, we have some decent debates and tease each other a bit, so this morning i started our chat off with "we got a MANDATE BABY!" with a wink and a smile. his reply was "we?" to which i responded "yes, we the majority!".

Anyway i then began to speak my mind a bit by saying that i felt the new house (and senate *crosses fingers*) would really need to work hard and keep their noses clean because my gut feeling is they will be under a microscope. Any mis-step or infraction and the media will jump on top of them.

His reply here was "bullshit - the press all but gave harry reid a pass on his land dealings" and "and where was the talk of the democrats with ties to abhramoff?"

I quickly replied that the Abhramoff stuff was bunk - to which he went off about how some Dem *staffers* were involved. Again i was quick to point out that no Dem in power was involved. He wasn't too thrilled with this.

"there wont be the war drum beatings for *any* democrat corruption scandals"

i told him that *i* would be the first to jump on top of them if they messed up (which is true! i didn't vote these people into office for more of the same, and i know NONE of you did either). He was also ranting about how the Dems haven't been working in a non-partisan manor (read: didn't just roll over and let the Republicans have their way). Next came the rant about how he really wants smaller government and less intrusion in his life - i caught him here because he was a HUGE supporter of that whole warrant-less wiretap business.

"No one's ever tapped my phone!" to while i replied "how do you know?". At this point i know i am dominating this little debate, so with my tongue firmly in my cheek i dropped the quote form Rummy about the lack of evidence of WMd in iraq ("the lack of a smoking gun is the smokiest gun of all!". This as I'm sure you can expect went over like a lead balloon. My friend then proceeded to rant about how we were right to be in iraq based on the sarin found - which we all know is a load of bull. Spent shells and small caches of sarin are NOT WMDs and were no risk to us. I could tell he was really getting pissed now - he went off on a rant about how the Dems will cut funding for the troops in iraq, effectively sentencing them to death and that i was sticking my head in the sand.

At this point i said to him "Look, it's obvious you're really bent out of shape over this - i'm going to go focus on some work while you cool down"

:D :D :D

(sorry for the long post! whew! damn it feels good)

1. You might want to remind your pal that Reid wasn't running for
anything. And as far as I know, no Dems are tied up in the Abramoff scandal. For your friend, reality sucks, I guess. You might suggest he get his news from other than r/w sources for a change to expand his mind!

2. Thanks for the tips!
...but i was able to hold my own!

What really burns me up is this guy tries so hard to not be associated with the republicans... yet is always in lock step.
A few months back, he was claiming he was going to vote straight dem in 06... which turned out to be bullshit (which to me was expected)

It's one thing to associate with a political ideology - but it's another if you're saying one thing and really mean another...

3. My god, does he get his "news" from anything but right-wing sources
Most of the shit he's spouting has long since been debunked!

5. Confirmation bias. Only the news/posts that validate the view he already has will
register. We're guilty of the same thing. Well, I am at least, on some matters, even though I immerse myself in research and consider myself to be open-minded.
