Don't ask Christine Pelosi to tell you about her mother Nancy. If Democrats carry the majority in the House of Representatives in the elections on November 7, mother will be the most powerful woman in America. Christine shoots back instantly: "Contact the press Office."

Don't try to insist by explaining that you just have a few background questions to ask (Does she speak French? or Who is designs her clothes?), and that you won't bring up any embarrassing political subjects (for example: What is her opinion on impeaching President Bush?). She gets angry. We have rules. You, at your newspaper, you have rules. For us it's the same. We are professionals. Pro-fess-ion-als! All you can do is retreat and hide behind the podium. For the family Pelosi, discipline is sacred.

This Saturday , Nancy Pelosi wore a lavender jacket over a black turtleneck. Her husband Paul chooses the designers; she detests shopping. She has a hard, polished side, like a brunette Hillary Clinton, and certain militants could see the two of them as candidates for the presidency and vice-presidency in 2008, if only to enrage the Republicans.

The House Democratic leader has come to Albuquerque, New Mexico to support the party's candidates. For the first time in 38 years, the Democrats could seize control of this district. And it is a woman who is leading the charge, Attorney General Patricia Madrid. From an electoral point of view, 2006 is the year of the woman. There have never been so many female candidates in districts that could change hands.
