In FL, Electronic Voting Shortfall Raises Eyebrows

By Paul Kiel - November 8, 2006, 11:03 AM

A recount battle is brewing, fittingly, in Katherine Harris' old seat, where a voting shortfall on buggy electronic voting machines is calling the election results into doubt.

"Republican Vern Buchanan was clinging to a 368-vote edge over Democrat Christine Jennings for the 13th Congressional District early this morning.

Although Buchanan declared victory just before 1 a.m., the razor-thin margin kept Jennings from conceding defeat and will generate an automatic recount...."

1. How do you recount
on touchscreens with no paper trail - and also I have been told that there is a FL allow that prohibits a recount of any vote that was cast on electronic voting machines - not sure if that is true or not but I have heard it and thought it ridiculous - but since its FL didn't surprise me....

2. Voting methods vary by county in Florida.
I'm not sure which ones, if any, have ONLY touchscreens available. At least, here in Leon county, we're primarily optical scanner, with touchscreens available on request, mostly for disabled people.

3. That is true. According to a *new law* that Jeb and his former Sec of State
Glenda Hood slipped into the works, it is illegal under FL law to recount any votes that have been already tallied by machine.

Nice, isn't it?

We really need to ban ALL machines from casting and counting our votes, and return to paper and pen voting, hand-counted at the precinct, under direct public observation, and the results telephoned in to the Sec of State's office.

Casting and counting our votes MUST remain in The People's hands.
