He had to attack first - it got the indictment of Bush's war out and denied any negative coments on teh troops.

I don't think he planned it. If that is the way things worked out, it's probably something more like the Battle of Midway, the torpedo planes sucking down the air cover right to the deck and opening up the way for the dive bombers. Completely unplanned but couldn't have gone any better if they spent a year planning it.
