Nancy Pelosi's "First 100 Hours" - Is it good enough?
Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed in what I'm seeing right now. No attempt to repeal the Military Commissions Act, which legalized torture. No attempt to curtail military tribunals. Instead, we get interest rates on student loans cut in half. Whee.

I think the new Speaker of the House needs to hit the ground running, not tread lightly. We want a mandate, and I'm not seeing one expressed in Pelosi's plans just yet.

1. It's 100 hours
The MCA is going bye-bye, but it'll take more than 100 hours.

16. I saw an interview with Murtha last night....
He stated very strongly that he wants accountability and answers for how this war is being handled.

Someone should ask the Capital Police to not allow shredding services into any building with legislative offices.

It's all well and good to talk about impeachment being off the table. It's never yet been on the table. Let the oversight begin and we'll see what turns up.

8. I don't think you fully appreciate the gravity of the situation
While I think Pelosi's focus on severing the link between lobbyists and legislation is commendable, we have a Constitution that has been compromised. It must be restored with all deliberate speed.

9. you dont think i appreciate the gravity? i dont think you can assume
and how condescending. no one is saying all these issues are NOT going to be addressed. they are talking about ready issues to place immediately to be dealt with. some of these others may take 200 hours.

14. Not trying to be condescending - I think we need to press our advantage
If we don't strike while the iron is hot, we may lose some key opportunities. Now that Democrats have the House, I don't want all their hard work, blood, sweat, and tears to go unrewarded.

which is my point. what we experienced yesteray and the american people accomplished leaves all ofit open, unwritten.... i am wiling to have faith, hence the joy of something happening not even 24 hours after elections

17. I hear you - I'm trying to keep my faith, but I've been burned before
I don't say this very often, but I used to be a Republican, myself. The GOP betrayed me by selling out to neo-cons and religious fundies instead of staying true to its mission. That began a long process where I turned more and more Democratic - Howard Dean sealed the deal for me in 2003.

Let's not bite off more than we can chew - it'll take a bit of time & planning to get things done - all Dems DON'T march in lockstep so...

As it should be. Yes some things are more important than just getting even. :eyes:

11. I think she will need some wins under her belt first.
She will need some early popular wins on things like the min wage and student loans to be able to bring those other things up.
She will need to show that she is not some liberal bitch that wants to destroy national security and help the terrorist first or else that is exactly how the republicans and the media will portray her.

12. We *have* a mandate... but she is acting with discretion,
and I for one appreciate it.

Think of the long run... we could have solid dem majorities for decades... or energize our opposition.

Which do you really prefer?

I trust her to do what is necessary in due course... in truth, the onus is on us to ensure that that is what is done. Let's not jump all over her on her first day for not being good enouh, huh?
