3. "Mainstream" is
okay if DU is alternative to the GOP Corporate death grip on cable and broadcast media.

If DU is now "mainstream," it is a good thing. We can now build on the infrastructure of the internets as an alternative source of news and information and as an effective tool is countering the GOP controlled propaganda machine known as ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, etc.

Remember the horseless carriage became mainstream and put the mighty giant railroads practically out of business for consumer travel.

We have taken the Congress. Now it's time to turn OFF the GOP Corporate Media and focus on strengthening the new alternative.

4. Sure.
We're still the underground, still seeking the deeper truth and not merely riding a wave of popularity.

We'll stay the underground, always working to protect and defend our Constitution/Bill of Rights, and liberty and equality for ALL. There are still just under half the population who would not be unhappy to destroy what we value.

Thus, we will remain The Democratic Underground.

8. I think DU still isn' t exactly mainstream.

Broadly speaking, the Democrats in power (a wonderful, wonderful phrase...) range from the left of the centre of the left (Feingold) to the right of the right of the left (Lieberman, the Nelsons); DUers mostly range from the left of the left of the left to the right of the left of the left, and are more heavily concentrated around the former of those, so that still gives us some ground to be under.

9. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
That was a good one!

However, keep this in mind. EVEN WITH a 35-40 Dem vote edge in the House, and a 50/50 split in the Senate, this Congress still does not even come close to representing the SEVENTY PERCENT of the American people who oppose the Iraq War and other Bush policies. We still have a lot of work to do to get that American MAJORITY back in power AS the TRUE mainstream--in Congress, in the news media and in the White House.

I will never forget these two stats: 56% of the American people opposed the Iraq War, way back in Feb. '03, BEFORE the invasion. 63% of the American people oppose torture "under any circumstances."

56% would be a landslide in a presidential election. How did that MAJORITY ever become so disempowered and demoralized?

We are still the "underground"--the real majority, which wants peace, justice and fairness, and always has. And we don't have those things YET. Peace, justice and fairness.
