This is how the gay marriage amendment in Arizona got squashed
"I am a conservative Republican and a Christian, and I voted NO on 107, because the God I serve would not take away benefits from anyone. We are supposed to love one another and take care of each other - "Judge not, lest you be judged, for where in you judge another, you are guilty of the same thing." (Romans 12)"
