OH CRAP! Did we just lose the Senate?!?
Think of it:

1. Rumsfeld resigns.
2. Robert Gates doesn't get approved or doesn't take the job.
3. Bush appoints Lieberman.
4. CT Republican governor appoints Republican senator.
5. 50-50 tie - broken by Dick for Repubs every time.

Might this happen?!?

2. We have the House.
Yes that could happen. But we have the House.

Not bad for a worst case. We want it all. And we should have it. The world deserves it. But...we'll see.

3. Can't Senate Reject Lieberman Apoointment?
Lieberman would have to be a total idiot to sign up with a loser like Bush. Unfortunately, he is and has in the past.

9. He'd never do it
Give up his lucrative senate kingmaker position, to be the secretary of defense presiding over a nightmare scenario for the other side? No way.

6. If I were Holy Joe...
... I think I'd rather be Emperor of the Senate with everyone kissing my ring, than preside over a failed and unpopular war.

But that's just me.

I think Bush will go with James Baker, the consigliere.

7. 1 or 2 might, but never 3
Lieberman knows where his bread is buttered. He'll play kingmaker whenever he can, because he's got the ego to do it, but he's still a 'Democrat'. It's where he gets his money, support, and where most of his political leanings lie.

No way in hell would he take that position.

8. Guaranteed that it was ...
plan B all along.

Like horseshoes and hand grenades. The Repukes only need to almost win, then they use sleazy strategery to override the will of the people. They have been doing it for 6 years now.

Cheers
Drifter

10. Robert Gates will get confirmed
Robert Gates is a signal of Shrub going to Poppy and saying "Daddy I fucked up, fix this". Gates isn't a hardcore neocon

13. Joe is no fool
He would see any offer to join the Bushies as being a dead end. At least he has six more years as a Senator and some power as a swing vote.

23. Exactly.
Joe will now believe that he is the most powerful man in the Senate. Who would give that up?

Yes he supported the war and whatnot, but he ain't taking that position for TWO years when he has a Senate seat for SIX.

himself as well as other stuff. He should know the Republicans will not support him. Now he can see what betrayal feels like.

20. Joe is not a dumb man
Why attach yourself to a sinking ship for two years and basically end your political career in 2008 when you can be the most important vote in the Senate for the next 6 and beyond?
