OAXACA UPDATE: Relative Quiet with Two Notable Exceptions
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 03:44 PM by Wiley50
Hi Folks,
Although I'm gonna hold off posting a Oaxaca Daily News Thread
until the situation heats back up ( That Potential Expected for This Weekend)

Yesterday there were two protest marches held in Oaxaca

One by supporters of the corrupt Governor Ulisies Ruiz

The other an APPO women's march for the return of the Disappeared.

Here's a Press Release from APPO concerning both marches

in spanish with english translation by Colin McKensie of OSAG:

7 November 2006, 11th day of the federal occupation of the state of Oaxaca

LA PFP ATACA A NIÑ@S Y MUJERES MANIFESTANTES

The Federal Preventative Police (PFP) attack children and women protesters

While the Secretary of Communications and Transportation "neither sees nor hears" the clandestine governmental radio station, Radio Ciudana, the signal of Radio Universidad is being destroyed. Nonetheless, the loss of this important means of communication for the organization of the popular movement, various thousands of Oaxacan women gathered today to march in demand for the presenting of those "disappeared" during the operation of the Federal Preventative Police, the liberty of political prisoners, the punishment of the assassins of fallen compañeros, and the withdrawal of the repressive forces from the state.

Nevertheless, having been a march of women, in which mothers marched with their little children, the Federal Preventative Police tried to break up the march, using water cannons, from a tank, when the march was passing by one of the access points to the zócalo, which was blocked by police, even though there was no intent to enter this zone occupied by said group, resulting in an injury to the face of one compañera.

This march, which advanced with the cry of orders such as: "liberty for political prisoners", "they took them alive, and alive we want them returned", "now more then ever it is indispensable that are freed and the perpetrators are punished" and "total repudiation of the federal force", which contrasted with the march, in support of Ulises Ruiz Ortiz and the presence of the PFP that took place during the morning (on the schedule of offices, in order to guarantee that people would show up), which was convened by the government and businesses, in which some convinced priistas participated, and many of them were obligated to attend the march: beneficiaries of government programs, and employees of the businesses and the government which convened the march, under threat of losing their benefits or work.

The critique of this form of "forced" march expressed itself in a creative manner in the women's march, with demands such as: "we're not bourgeois, nor old drunk ladies, we're dignified and proud Oaxacans", and "they marched in white, because they were forced to" or its variant "they marched in white and they were paid 200 ". On one of the walls, near Santo Domingo, one of those forced to march posted a poster with the following legend:

"AVISO

HERMANO OAXAQUEÑO

DESGRACIADAMENTE SOY TRABAJADOR DE GOBIERNO, FUIMOS OBLIGADOS A MARCHAR POR EL GOBIERNO DE ULI SES RUIZ, SI NO NOS CORREN O NOS DESCUENTAN UN MES DE SUELDO, PERO NOS SENTIMOS TRAIDORES DEL PUEBLO; PUES ES NUESTRO ÚNICO SUBSIDIO PERO ESTAMOS CON USTEDES PUEBLO DE OAXACA"

"WARNING

OAXACAN BROTHER

SADLY, I AM A GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE, WE WERE FORCED TO MARCH BY

THE GOVERNMENT OF ULISES RUIZ, SO THEY WOULDN'T FIRE US OR TAKE AWAY ONE MONTH'S SALARY,

BUT WE FEEL LIKE TRAITORS; SO IT'S OUR ONLY COMPENSTATION BUT

WE ARE WITH YOU PEOPLES OF OAXACA

While Ulises Ruiz Ortiz continues clinging to power, sustained by the federal government and business groups, the people do not cede to his demands, given the death and persecution unleashed en su contra. During today's early morning, a transnational which sells hamburgers was attacked with Molotov cocktails bombs, in what appears to be attempt to frame the APPO and justify the detention made during the day , above all, of youth. Today five were detained in two operations in the first minutes of the day <8 Nov.>, 16 compañeros in the barricades of the Plaza de Cinco Señores (near the university campus) and Carrillo Puerto , and are being transported by ministerial police and municipal police of Santa Lucia del Camino.

¡FUERA DE OAXACA ULISES RUIZ Y LAS FUERZAS FEDERALES DE OCUPACIÓN!

¡LEAVE OAXACA, ULISES RUIZ AND THE FEDERAL OCCUPYING FORCES!

¡LIBERTAD INMEDIATA E INCONDICIONAL A L@S PRES@S POLÍTIC@S!

¡RESPETO A LOS DERECHOS HUMANOS Y GARANTÍAS CONSTITUCIONALES EN NUESTRO ESTADO!

¡RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND CONSTITUTIONAL GUARANTEES IN OUR STATE!

¡POR NUESTROS MUERTOS, PRESOS Y DESAPARECIDOS, NI UN PASO ATRÁS!

¡FOR OUR DEAD, IMPRISONED AND DISAPPEARED, NOT ONE STEP BACK!

2. Help Urgently Needed For RADIOTUPA Broadcast Electronics Shipment
WWW.RADIOTUPA.ORG

Folks,
We are currently working to put together a shipment
of Broadcast Radio Transmitters and other broadcast electronics
for the people of Oaxaca.

A Revolutionary Runs on Food. A Revolution Runs On Communication.

Radio Universidad/ Radio APPO, the main communications artery
of the heroic struggle of the oppressed people of Oaxaca is
in desperate need for a back up transmitter and other transmitters
and equipment are needed to relay the signal to the remote reaches
of the region. Equipment is also needed to override the government
jamming of Radio APPO's signal.

Please take a look at the website of Radio Tupa, a project of Free Radio Berkeley

And Help If You Can
