Bush panics as US religious right fails to stem Democrat tide
President George W. Bush was described by political commentators in Washington DC as in ‘near meltdown’ today after his alliance with the religious right failed to stop Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives – and probably the Senate too – in the mid-term US congressional elections.

By this evening Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld, blamed for obdurate denial and political miscalculation over the Iraq war and its aftermath, had resigned. And Rick Santorum, standard-bearer of the Christian right, conceded defeat in Pennsylvania.

In a stumbling performance at his main press briefing, Mr Bush talked of his administration “always changing tactics” and admitted that he had not seen the latest set-back coming.

He claimed that his recent statement that Mr Rumsfeld would stay until 2009 was a delaying tactic, and said that he had always planned to replace him with Robert Gates, a former CIA director. Insiders doubt this.

ah, I am totally bushed.
wait, that's a bad choice of word. I am so thrilled, tired, relieved, happy, exhausted and content. although I still pinch myself to make sure it really happened.

3. HE DIDN'T SEE IT COMING?!?!?!?!
Good God/dess, the man is blind as well as an idiot.

Even conservative pundits like Pat Buchanan have been saying for weeks that the House was sure to go Dem and maybe the Senate as well!!

5. Did he really admit the "delaying tactic"?
I find that incredibly hard to believe - anyone actually see him say that?

If he did admit this, then he's basically saying that he purposefully lied to the American public for the sake of his political advantage. I doubt even bush is stupid enough to say that.

10. Bush: "I just don't know why 'the nuts' deserted me"

...that he had not seen the latest set-back coming. Bush went to add, "Didn't see it at all. Just like 9/11 and Katrina, it went right by me!"
