"He's Not Quite Dead Yet." - J D Hayworth Not Conceding - AZ Republic

Hayworth not ready to concede to Mitchell

Associated Press
Nov. 8, 2006 12:47 PM

<snip>

Republican Rep. J.D. Hayworth said Wednesday it was too early to draw conclusions in the race for Arizona's 5th Congressional District, even though results showed Democrat Harry Mitchell had him beat. Mitchell received 71,077 votes, or 50.5 percent, while Hayworth got 65,122 votes, or 46.2 percent, with all precincts reporting. Libertarian Warren Severin had 4,620 votes, or about 3.3 percent. An undetermined number of early and provisional ballots remained to be counted.

"Let's get the count done," Hayworth said Wednesday after visiting the Maricopa County elections office in downtown Phoenix. "There's tens of thousands of ballots that have yet to be counted." Hayworth, a 12-year incumbent, said he visited the elections office to "get my hands on what's been counted and what's not been counted." He said if the outstanding ballots do not tip in his favor, he'd "be the first to congratulate Harry."

Arizona GOP Chairman Matt Salmon told supporters Tuesday night that Democrats were celebrating too early. "Democrats are doing cartwheels in the end zone," he said. "If you think Hayworth is going to lose this race, then you are in fantasy land."

At a Democratic rally, Mitchell, a former state senator and the former longtime mayor of Tempe, held off on declaring victory but was glowing. "I want you to know that when all the votes are counted, you will have a new congressman in this district," he told a crowd of cheering supporters.

In 12 years in office, Hayworth, a former radio news commentator and TV sports broadcaster, met with mostly feeble challenges to unseat him. He had never won by less than 48 percent of the vote and won by at least 60 percent in his last three races.

11. It is true, absentee & provisional ballots are still being counted
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 04:55 PM by Coventina
However, it is VERY UNLIKELY that they will significantly trend differently than the ballots that have already been tallied.

It's over. Hayworth refusing to concede just makes him look like a bigger ass. (Something I didn't think was possible).

In the UNLIKELY event that the ballots would change the result, Hayworth would still win, even though he conceded.

This "refusing to concede" thing seems to be a new trend.

Last night when Munsil was losing to Janet by 30 POINTS!!!!
He refused to concede until late in the evening.

Like somehow the numbers would magically reverse?!?!?

He wouldn't even come and thank his supporters.

What a fucking asshole.

I'm so glad he's crunchy toast.

And yes, I AM doing cartwheels in the endzone.

6. A lot of Arizonans cast absentee ballots
which end up being counted after regular ballots are cast . . . BUT it's hard to imagine Pig-Boy picking up 7,000 votes. For all we know, the absentees favor Mitchell anyway.

Bye bye JD! You're one less embarassment for our state!

18. one of best friends loves JD Hayworth...
Gushes over him like he is God's gift to.... well, something. My friend works for Homeland Security and has met Hayworth, and fellow AZ nutbag John Shadegg, a few times and just thinks those guys are the shit.

First time I saw Hayworth on TV, I literally burst out laughing after a few seconds. The guy is quite possibly the stupidest member of Congress and that is saying a lot. And, I don't mean "stupid" from the standpoint that I am just saying it because I don't agree with the guy, I mean JD Hayworth is literally dumber than a box of rocks. He's one of those Chimp/Macaca type guys who cannot go off script or he is screwed. He went off script this campaign and it killed him. But I am going to tease my friend so bad about this. I always have teased him for having a man crush on this moron, but he is going to get it even worse now. :)

22. yeah until he realized he'd get majorly thumped by Janet
I remember he was pissing around about how she was such media darling that nobody could fairly challenge her. I wonder if he is still considering it four years from now? He had designs on it, as you said, but I wonder what he is thinking now....

23. His "master plan" was to ride out Janet's 2nd term in the Congress
Then run for governor after she was term-limited.

But now, I'm hoping that plan is as dead as his congressional career.

24. I assume he's familiar with that threshold
Didn't he used to sleep in his congressional office?

What a putz. What an embarrassment to Arizona and all the truly fine people who live here. What a relief that he's gone.

Tansy Gold, wishing Jeff Flake were gone, too.
