Many of us would have gone crazy, or been forced to try and network through other progressive sites that are nowhere near as great as this one.

Some of us may have been lost, given up and wandered off the grid.

The DSM might have been quickly forgotten, and Air America might not have survived its initial birth pangs and growing pains since then.

All props to Moveon.org, Truthout, Alternet, FDL, and the host of other sites out there with a progressive viewpoint, but DU is the wellspring--a web presence like no other.

We organize well. We send letters, petitions, and flowers to the places they need to go. We volunteer for phone banks, and to canvass neighborhoods, and write stinging diatribes against the hypocricy of the elected officials and pundits who claim to speak for us.

We generate thoughts and words that echo through the blogosphere and into the real world and, as we saw yesterday, generate REAL CHANGE.

Even the trolls deserve some (tiny) amount of credit, because they help to keep us motivated, and train our wits to respond with lightning celerity to talking points and other nonsense that they try to use to stagger us.

All you DUers who made a difference, please stand up and take a bow.

Each and every one of you deserve a Medal of Freedom. Unfortunately, that's not mine to give. But you all have my heartfelt thanks and congratulations.

Without DU, without YOU, the world would be a much, much poorer place.

3. Utterly incredible.

Having grown up in Silicon Valley, with a father intimately involved in the birth of the personal computer, and the integrated chip industry, I got to see it all evolve. We used to talk about the hydrofluoric acid and other things that were part of making chips. But we knew there was a reason. And we knew where this was heading.

Then in 1998 I sold a piece of property to an engineer with Sun Microsystems. I was on the internet, but was only streaming music. Barely. And when this man told me that forums were going to be the biggest thing on the net, I really didn't know what he was talking about. Then slowly it grew. And here we are today with the most powerful resource the human race has ever known.

What we did here was nothing short of a miracle. We took down a dictatorship in six years. Not a century.

And I would say that what we have here is more than a forum. This is an organism. We are one.
