1. They're canvassing the precincts. Which is another clever name for
recount.

2. Less than 1/2 separates the two men
State must do a recount of the ballots.
Required by VA law.

8. Fortunately most of the state votes on TOUCH SCREENS
<ahem> and there is no paper trail to count again <cough>

Ain't that a shame for ex-senator Macaca

12. In most cases, THERE ARE NO BALLOTS.
Virginia is ovverrun with paperless touchscreens.

3. Patience
I'd far rather be in Webb's boots than Allen's; overcoming a lead of several thousand votes just isn't going to happen, and Allen's political career will be over soon enough. Then he go back to doing what he does best -- whatever in hell that is.

4. What's the hurry?
Accuracy and integrity before speed.

In WA-08, the Challenger, Darcy is behind, but most of her votes will come from King County and they apparently will be doing another big tally soon which may put her ahead!

7. Amen.
We have two months to get this worked out. We should all be supporting any efforts to make this as as accurate as possible.

9. But wouldn't the precincts show 100% reporting BEFORE the recount/canvass?

10. It's my understanding that "precincts" don't reflect mailed it ballots
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 06:35 PM by RobertSeattle
So you could have 100% precinct reporting but 200,000 votes outstanding in a big state.

5. They outsourced the count to West Virginia
And it takes a lot of time to take your shoes off and put them on again repeatedly.

Damn cipherin'!

6. EVERY state has to certify their votes
EVERY state has to certify their votes, Virginia included. Even in the states where a particular candidate was declared the winner, the election boards still need to meet and verify the results, usually within the next week. I know for a fact that there's a precinct in Isle of Wight County that was unable to get their total in because the machine broke at the end of the night. The tech won't be there to fix it until tomorrow. It's the smallest district in the county with only a hundred or so voters, but it leans about 70% Allen.

I'm on the edge of my seat too, but this process is the legal and safe way of doing things. It will make the victory dance even sweeter in a few weeks.

11. It's not ridiculous, it's Virginia law
And, I'm all for trusting our Dem Governor and SOS on following the rule of law in such an important matter. Webb will be certified on November 27. He;s already won, they've said so. They are just tying up loose ends and making everything legal and official.

We won the Senate. Enjoy!

14. Sorry friend, I was confused. I thought they were still counting from
yesterday - didn't know that the recount had begun.

13. I'm all for making sure it's right. The canvas is good,
and mandated by law. I just want everyone's vote counted accurately, as opposed to some people we know. I still remember talking to a Puke friend in '00, who said he knew that a "statewide recount would be the right thing", but he didn't support it, "I just want to win". I'm not them.

15. maybe we need "rent-a-riot"
shades of Florida 2000, when the state was over-run by yuppie, right-wing congressional staffers.
