I reckon our total of House pickups would have been double :) If you think thats nuts, trawl through the highlighted races we lost and see how close many of them were http://edition.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/house/

In 2004, vote shaving produced similar results as I recall.
California: Doolittle R 104,307 49% 100% of precincts reporting Brown D 97,022 Musgrave R 104,876 46% 99% of precincts reporting Paccione D 97,670
Connecticut: Shays R 106,558 51% 100% of precincts reporting Farrell D 99,913 48%
Ohio: Chabot R 101,838 53% 100% of precincts reporting Cranley D 90,963 47%
