First Female Sheriff in Maine, is also a Democrat

ST. GEORGE (Nov 8): Donna Dennison woke at 4:30 a.m. this morning to a phone call from a friend telling her that she would be the next Knox County Sheriff — and the first woman ever elected to such a post in Maine.

This was a surprise to Dennison, who went to bed Tuesday night thinking that her opponents, Todd Butler and Alfred Ockenfels, were left to battle out the election results from town to town, island to island.

"At first, I thought Todd had it," she said, Wednesday afternoon. "Then someone called and said Al had it. It was flipping back and forth. I was surprised when I got the call, and I am glad it’s over."

Dennison, a Democrat, emerged last spring as the party candidate to run for sheriff, a post that has been occupied by current Knox County Sheriff Dan Davey for past 22 years. Ockenfels, a Republican, beat Daveys for the party nominee in June; subsequently, Chief Deputy Todd Butler entered the field as an unenrolled Independent, setting the stage for a three-way run for office.
