The Associated Press has just posted a piece on its exit polls, and just like CNN's exit polls found, AP is finding that corruption is a key issue driving voters today. AP's exit numbers are also finding a surprisingly high number of evangelicals going Dem, a trend that many political analysts noted early in the cycle:

Those early exit polls also showed that three in four voters said corruption was very important to their vote, and they tended to vote Democratic. In a sign of a dispirited GOP base, most white evangelicals said corruption was very important to their vote — and almost a third of them turned to the Democrats.

1. maybe part of the reason we were able to overcome the fraud and supression
is that so many repubs crossed over and they are not the targets of the supression.

3. Which goes to show, some people here shouldn't be continually trashing evangelicals
Instead, they should be welcoming them into the party.

6. It's too soon to welcome them yet, I'm afraid
The moment the scandals die down, and abortion is the first thing on their minds again, they'll go back to their old ways of voting. :(

5. that's really huge--what a turnaround in thinking!
I was reminded of that this morning, when I was watching a tape of "Is God Green?" with Moyers.

One of the Evangelicals said "To be biblically consistent, sometimes you must be politically inconsistent."

They're getting it, and I bet a lot of those 1/3 were the environmental evangelicals!

:bounce:

7. This is nothing new...just a return to normal
During the Clinton years, and even in 2000, Democrats got about 40% of evangelical votes every time...millions of people. As someone on DU has said, 9/11 merely delayed the coming Democratic majority. The return of evangelicals to the party was delayed as well.

8. Will there now be mass excommunications from fundie churches?
I remember the church that kicked out all the members who voted for Kerry two years ago.

I think it's a very positive development that some of them are abandoning their sheeplike behavior.
