2. YOU BET IT IS!
Justice Stevens is very ill. He could retire soon or die, G-d forbid, and the psycho could nominate another Scalito and then the court is lost. Now we can stop him from stacking the court with religious RW ideologues.

11. Bush still names the nominee and there are plenty of Dems
who will still confirm assholes to the US Supreme Court, as witnessed by the last 2 nominees and the yay votes by many many Dems.

14. But those Dems aren't on the Judiciary Committee, are they?
The nominee must make it to the Senate floor first.

17. LOL....I take it you don't agree?
The Judiciary has to vote the nominee out of committee first. WE control the Judiciary Committee now.

Leahy will now be the chair. We have Biden, Durbin, Kennedy, Feingold, Feinstein and Kohl on the Judiciary. NONE of them voted Scalito out of committee. Why would they do anything different if the psycho nominates another ideologue like Scalito?

23. I guess I'm just scared Stevens is soon going to pass away
and I'm terrified the Dems will roll over somehow and the media will gang up on them, and BAM! we'll have another Scalito.

You're right, we are in a safer position now.

I just wish we could get a real progressive in there to balance out the right-wing freakshows that are sitting now.

7. president STILL appoints and does not lOSE that right
if it is a conservative we dont get to just say no, it is more complicated than that. electing kerry would have made sc safe, not a dem congress. that simply allows us some power to control who bush selects

10. But the Senate has to let the nominee onto the Senate floor.
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 09:43 PM by in_cog_ni_to
WE control the Judiciary Committee now. If he nominates an Ideologue...we can stop it before it gets to the floor. Remember all the Clinton nominees who never made it out of committee?

My imagination of Bush appointing a 3rd Justice was scary. Lets all pray for Justice Stevens health.

22. THAT'S why the Senate was so important
Who cares about getting majorities on certain bills - yeah, that's STILL going to be a pain, but having a majority on all of the committees (especially judicial) is CRITICAL!!

24. I wouldn't call it safe yet.
Half of the Senate Democrats voted for John Roberts despite him being an anti abortion extremist. It won't be safe until we control the Whitehouse again.

27. ER, don't bet on it. It was Biden and Kennedy that gave us Clarence Thomas....
Although Patrick Leahy as head of the Judiciary Committee may make it all better.

But I'm afraid of DLCers peeling off under pressure of the RW scream machine, plus fear of the upcoming election in 2008 giving us a nominee that isn't liberal enough to really make us safer.
