Oh, the irony...
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1735208/posts

Since Virginia is one of those states that uses electronic voting machines with no paper trail, there isn't any way to do a real recount. All they can do is to add up the numbers again.

That's not going to help. The answer is to require some sort of verifiable paper trail. Here in MN, we use optical readers. The ballot I filled out will be available for a recount, if necessary.

Good Heavans! What an innovative concept!

2. (Slaps head in frustration)
They want paper trails when it's their ass on the line, but we're nuts because we want to ensure honest elections.

(sigh) These are the people we kicked out of the House and Senate on their ears, folks.

17. I do too...and then all the Dems and folks who have been shouting about this for the longest time
can calmely and in agreement say: "We are so, so, so glad to hear you say this because this is exactly what we have been shouting from the rooftops and not only did no one in the Republican controlled House and Senate listen, but we were called conspiracy theorists and worse names. We can't agree more that proprietary software run machines with no paper trail and way to do a hand recount is undemocratic. Let's all change the law and make sure that we have paper trail verifiable and auditable systems.

16. It's the same irony we see with their gerrymandering of districts,
their threat of the nuclear option to prevent filibusters, their gathering of dictatorial power in the executive under the unitary executive theory.

In every case, they are assuming they will always be the ones in power. If they could imagine a Dem president wielding such pwoers, they would wet themselves.

Similarly, the paperless vote becomes a problem when they are on the losing side.

I am glad that the Dems say they want to restore congressional dsitricts to what they were before the twisted gerrymandering Delay and company instituted, but since Delay's henchmen used that tactic, they have made it feasible for the Dems to do it, too--though I think if the Dems try to we should nail them. They need to restore appropriate districts, not gerrymander weird ones.

21. Our upstate NY TV news
called for that too, since Cheney had done so much damage here, refashioning districts for WH benefit, notably to take out a Dem seat(making a mega Dem district) and make GOP districts where loyal hacks and extremists could simply be placed and protected. Of course the news missed the whole story but the attack on gerrymandering itself is the main thing.

It isn't healthy for EITHER party and betrays the locals and the power of democracy. But if the GOP keeps putting rotten apples into "safe" districts their whole barrel will go rotten. Their dilemma is to find moderate competents with principles or surrender the district alignment. In other words, the cheaters have screwed themselves out of business and created a vacuum their RW is unwilling and unable to cope with.

I would like to see Massa run again, a woman this time to take on Reynolds(build her up now as a face up front in the district). The heaviest GOP defections are among their women and moderates. Considering how this ate up a 60,000 registration advantage!!, the conservative base has almost succeeded in destroying the actual strength of the party itself as a statewide entity. And this is dragging down the Conservative Party who once surged AHEAD of the GOP statewide. Another great sign.

Pataki is toast for presiding over this destruction.
