So my 6 year old asks me today...
"When do we vote for the next war?"

It occurs to me that in her 6 years of life, a lot of what she's heard is us talking about George Bush and people on both sides who "voted for the war". It seems normal to her that after an election, we "vote" for war. It's kinda sobering to realize that. :(

2. My 6-Year Old is Psyched
I decided to teach him about The Smirk a year or so ago - I told him that George Bush is a bad villain that takes toys from children who only have a few toys, and gives them to children who already have lots of toys. This morning he excitedly asked if the poor children will get their toys back now. "Perhaps", I said, "if the Democrats do their job."

3. I've got a six year old, too.

I was thinking today she's never known anything in politics except us being angry and disgusted with the presidency and Congress. I'm just glad that at least she was born in 2000 under a Democratic president -- by a matter of months.

4. An ex Navy friend said...
...it seems whenever Republicans are elected they get us into a war. So the observation is very poignant. with ONLY TWO PARTIES, then the public is voting for the war party in regular cycles. We need more parties, whatever it takes.

5. I know what you mean with these young kids and what they're exposed to

about this "war" talk -- I have a five-year-old who's made similar references to "Bush's war."

Btw, for some reason, your post made me think of something Bush said today that sounded ominous:

In regards to a question about working with the Democrats, Bush said:

I'm also looking forward to working with them to make sure that we institutionalize to the extent possible steps necessary to make sure future Presidents are capable of waging this war. Because Iraq is a part of the war on terror, and it's -- I think back to Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower. Harry Truman began the Cold War, and Eisenhower, obviously, from a different party, continued it. And I would hope that would be the spirit that we're able to work together. We may not agree with every tactic, but we should agree that this country needs to secure ourselves against an enemy that would like to strike us again. This enemy is not going away after my presidency.

Sadly, I think our young kids will spend most of their formative years hearing about war.

7. It's sobering and a little weird.
When I read this, it occurred to me that my six-year-old daughter has never been cognizant of any president other than W. She was ten months old when he was first "elected."
