The Republican Party of today = the Democratic Party of 1972... |
|
There was another war going on. We had experienced Woodstock in 1969 and Richard Nixon was the President. There had been 58,000 deaths in Vietnam and the country was fed up with the war. Our Party nominated George McGovern, the anti-war candidate, as our candidate in 1972.
But there we were. George Wallace Democrats on one side and George McGovern liberals on the other. Our Party was torn. We were no longer a Party of war, we were a Party of peace. We lost the election in 1972 in one of the largest Republican landslides in history - even though most of the nation knew Nixon was a crook and that we had no choice but to "stay the course" in Vietnam.
Today's Republican Party finds itself in similar straits. The election of 2006 is now over. Democrats now run the House and the Senate. Republicans are still scratching their heads and trying to figure out what the hell happened? One can see the divide starting to happen in their Party.
As Rush Limbaugh, one of their heroes, said this morning, "Conservatives did not lose yesterday - Republicans lost..." And that is the crux of their divide. They dream of returning to the days of "conservatism" and Ronald Reagan. They seem to forget about the huge deficits and debt that Reagan, the "conservative", ran up in the 1980's. But, real or imagined, he is the symbol for the conservative wing of the Republican Party.
But there is another side to this Party. There is a moderate-to-liberal wing forming in the GOP. They believe there is a role for government, besides being just a whipping boy for the conservative radicals. The conservatives are the most vocal and radical wing of the Republican Party. They are divided from Republicans such as Dick Lugar, John Warner, Chuck Hagel, and even, John McCain. This is how they divide their camps. We can only watch as they implode from their own divisive natures.
