How many Progressive Caucus members can we expect now? |
|
First, I'm feel very grateful for those centrist Democrats who won in red states. A friend expressed concern that one of the winners would probably become a 'Blue Dog' dem. But I am deeply grateful anyway, for the present that even a Blue Dog brings is committee leaderships handed out to liberals like Mr. Conyers.
However, my interest is in seeing a shift in the dominant pro-war, corporatist-driven agenda towards environmentalism, peace, and real democracy. So can we figure out how much the numbers have gone up for the progressives in congress?
John Hall and Jerry McNerney are 2 new likely progressives in the House.
Cynthia McKinney is a loss for the caucus and something tells me that her replacement, Henry Johnson Jr., is less likely to be a member.
Sherrod Brown is a progressive pickup for the Senate; but can we assume that Betty Sutton, Sherrod's replacement in the House for Ohio 13, is a possible progressive caucus member? Labor lawyer, favors health care for all..not sure how leftwing she is but that seems like a good start.
Likewise for Bernie Sanders.
Current Progressive caucus members in the House: Lynn Woolsey Barbara Lee Neil Abercrombie Tammy Baldwin Xavier Becerra Madeleine Bordallo Corrine Brown Sherrod Brown (* elected to Senate) Michael Capuano Julia Carson Donna Christensen William “Lacy” Clay Emanuel Cleaver John Conyers Elijah Cummings Danny Davis Peter DeFazio Rosa DeLauro Lane Evans Sam Farr Chaka Fattah Bob Filner Barney Frank Raul Grijalva Luiz Gutierrez Maurice Hinchey Jesse Jackson, Jr Sheila Jackson-Lee Stephanie Tubbs Jones Marcy Kaptur Carolyn Kilpatrick Dennis Kucinich Tom Lantos John Lewis Ed Markey Jim McDermott James McGovern Cynthia McKinney (lost in primary) George Miller Gwen Moore Jerry Nadler Eleanor Holmes-Norton John Olver Major Owens Ed Pastor Donald Payne Bobby Rush Bernie Sanders (* elected to Senate) Jan Schakowsky Jose Serrano Louise Slaughter Hilda Solis Pete Stark Bernie Thompson John Tierney Tom Udall Nydia Velazquez Maxine Waters Diane Watson Mel Watt Henry Waxman
