The Mark we knew

By Jan Tuckwood

Palm Beach Post Associate Editor

Sunday, October 08, 2006

If all you know about Mark Foley is what you heard last week, you'd find the inscription under his 1973 senior yearbook photo odd:

"Mark A. Foley. Noted for — being a ladies man."

'ALWAYS A STYLER': Mark posed with classmate Frances Krenkel in an ad for Fountains department store in the 1973 yearbook.

FIRST POLITICAL INTERVIEW, 1977: When Mark joined the Lake Worth City Commission at 22, he gave his first big interview to The Palm Beach Post. 'So many times when politicians are elected, they forget what the people need,' he said then. 'They lose touch.' His goal then: To become governor or president.

U.S. Rep. Mark Foley resigns

Mark Foley Disclosure of inappropriate communications with teen pages ends career.

If you went to Lake Worth High School with Mark, as I did, and you saw his skinny self surrounded daily by an entourage of the most popular girls in school, you wouldn't be surprised at all.

Mark always had fans at the foot of his stage.

"Look at this picture of Mark as an altar boy," says Chuck Johnson, a classmate of ours and the son of J. Sam Johnson, the photographer who captured most of Lake Worth's big moments in the '60s and '70s. "He looks like he's going to jump off the frame and go shake hands."

(you simply must read the whole saga...)

1. I don't find it amusing... It seems as if the writer knew Foley well and always wanted
him to come out of the closet... and is hoping that maybe this whole thing will allow him to be himself finally.

Forgive me if I'm reading it differently than you :)

4. I did not find it "amusing" as in haha funny
just weird that someone would go so far in the newspaper, before the investigation was completed.

and as others have said, it's sad that he went so far to hide who he was, when people alrady knew.

he was hiding from himself..

3. No Thanks.
The Saga of Mark Foley doesn't interest me, even as historical fiction.
