Iraqis cheer Rumsfeld departure, look for changes in US approach

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqis on Thursday cheered the resignation of US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, blaming him for policy failures and scandals they say helped spawn the daily sectarian carnage wracking their nation.

“Rumsfeld’s resignation shows the scale of the mess the US has made in Iraq,” said Ibrahim Ali, 44, who works at the Oil Ministry. “The efforts by American politicians to hide their failure are no longer working.”

Iraq’s government has yet to comment on Rumsfeld’s resignation, announced Wednesday after the US Democratic Party won a sweeping victory in midterm elections in which voter discontent over the war in Iraq played a major role.

1. Did you see NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams last night?
What is the name of the intrepid reporter who spends most of his time in Iraq? Oh yeah, Richard Engle....anyway, he reported receiving a phone call from a very high official in the Ambassador's office (maybe the ambassador himself?) who asked Richard, "W hat does this election mean for us? What will happen to us now?" He was very worried, and wanted events in US interpreted for him. So, I can imagine that the resignation of Rummy has made them even more confused....how can they comment when they don't know what it means for them?
