*** THE MEDIA'S "FUZZY MATH" on EVANGELICALS ***
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 11:06 AM by Dob Bole
What the media hasn't discussed yet: A MAJORITY (or near-majority) OF EVANGELICALS VOTED FOR DEMOCRATS THIS YEAR.

Many of you have heard by now that one-third of Evangelicals voted for Democrats in the midterm elections. It has been described as a "shift," a "moving away from the GOP," etc. But that's only half of the story, because The AP did not deem Black evangelicals important enough to report on!

The following requires lots of estimation and fuzzy math of my own:

According to Adherents.com there are 125,312,000 evangelicals in the United States...44 percent of the population. Of that number, roughly 20 million are black. Of black evangelicals, about 10 percent (2 million) vote Republican, and the other 18 million (when they vote) vote for Democrats every time. Got it so far? Assuming at first that EVERY EVANGELICAL VOTED, one third of white evangelicals would be 42,606,080. Add 18 million black evangelicals to that number, and you get 62,606,080, almost HALF of all evangelicals in the country.

Of course, only slightly more than 40% of people actually voted in the midterm elections...but of that 40%, black evangelicals are assumed to have turned out more heavily, and voted more heavily Democratic this year, because:

a) This is the first election since Hurricane Katrina.
b) In Virginia and Tennesee, two states with a high percentage of evangelicals, racism played a factor.

Add higher turnout of black evangelicals to the fact that many right-wing evangelicals sat this one out, and it is highly probable that A MAJORITY OF EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS VOTED DEMOCRATIC THIS YEAR!

The bottom line is this: Evangelicals' share of the Democratic vote this year was HIGHER than their share of the population as a whole (which, as I said earlier, is 44%.) Yet, since no one seems to have bothered to get data on black people, and the conservatives who come on the air only care about the white fundy evanglicals, to my knowledge this hasnt been reported in any major news outlet.

Tell the people! :)

4. You make an excellent point.
Everyone ignores the Black Church - with one notable exception: Bill Clinton.

I suspect you are right. O8)

5. Well, it probably doesn't count the black evangelical vote
because they, being black, were already with the democrats. It takes a really self-loathing black person to vote for the thugs. It is the white evangelicals that cause problems - they are the troublemakers. So, the white evangelicals are viewed as the hardcore thug base. However, they should qualify "Evangelicals" as "White Evangelicals." That is a relevant point.
