IMO the corruption has already begun
Why should one Representative's office be any bigger or nicer than any other? Why should Nancy have to "measure the drapes"? It is one of the "percs" of power they say. Well what other "percs" come with power? I can see the Democrats rubbing their grubby paws together right now thinking of all the "Percs" they are about to receive. I can understand the President should have a home that befits the Leader of this Free Nation. A home to entertain foreign dignitaries and foreign leaders. I can see every single Representative having an office that befits their representation of the people. But why should one be any better than another? Just because they are now in the Majority should not mean they be treated any differently than the other Representatives. One might say that they now have greater responsibility and that is true but they also have the entire rest of Congress to delegate some of that responsibility to. It is just the first step in corruption and we the people are the ones initiating it...There should be no reason for Nancy to move to any different office than the one she already is in. Her staff requirements because of the majority status may have changed some but she needs to rely upon the staffs of all the other 434 Representatives to work for America and not just the Democratic Party. I know it has never been done this way but sometimes things need to change. I can not see the benefit from special "percs" at least for the American people. I can see the benefits for a select few that get special favor in return...

2. Some people will bitch no matter what....
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 11:14 AM by Stand and Fight
And you seem to be one of them. Rather than being elated that our side has actually won for once, you would rather focus on something petty that simply does not matter. Let me guess... Are you one of those people who are simply never satisfied and will complain no matter what measures are taken? From my view point it seems that way. Try to look at all the good things that will happen as a result. Honestly, I cannot see why any member of this site in their correct frame of mind would be bitching about something like office space, the drapes, or what this or that representative is doing on account of new status. Just what the heck is your problem?

9. Picky aren't you. The winning party has always moved into the
bigger offices in line with their added responsibilies with committee leadership. The buildings they are asigned to have different size rooms, are you suggesting we build some big ugly building just so eveyone has equal size rooms? As to drapes - it is none of our business how they want to decorate their own offices. Would you move into a home that had old furniture if you had a choice.

29. Bingo - finally a voice of reason
Yes, with the majority comes committee chairmanships, ergo you need more staff to handle the added responsibilities. I have been to Washington DC several times on lobbying missions for higher education issues and you would not believe how cramped those offices are. You can't simply shoehorn in several more staffers, desks, etc.

12. drapes, office space, may be overblown, but agreed
we have a higher responsibility to make the democracy process honest

e.g.,
>undo the gerrymandering business so that incumbents should be fully accountable to the voters, letting the chips fall where they may

>disconnect the power of K street and the bribery entailed (lobby lawyers like Tauzin are the worst, IMO)

And it's Perks, not Percs.

And for a long time Republicans have basically shat on Democrats. While I don't think we should turn around and shit on them - I do think taking a few of their Perks for ourselves isn't the worst idea in the world.

19. We have to push the Dems to legislate against as much corruption...
...as possible. It sure as heck wasn't going to happen under Republican rule, but I see a good chance for some meaningful reform.

But, yes, candidates of either party reach office well-trained to whore for money. We must go to work on them immediately, and demand accountability every step of the way.

21. It's a long-standing tradition
If someone in a leadership position wants to forego a larger office with a better view, fine, that's their decision. But what would be done with those larger office suites? Use them to store old furniture and file boxes? True reform is measured in results that benefit the country, not superficial gestures like downsizing office space. In this instance, leadership has a long-standing tradition of occupying the choicer offices that also accomodate larger staff commensurate with the position. That's not necessarily going to change, nor should it. Again, what matters is the legislation that eminates from the office space, not the length of the drapes.

26. The Offices in the Senate and House
are not the greatest places. I have observed that there are basement office in some banks that are much better. Let her have the best office she can get. I think she has to move to the Capitol because she is the speaker. Don't want her in a hovel. She gets Denny's office ha ha ha.

22. Location, location, location
Offices on the top floor and the basement might be a similar size, but consider the VIEW.

As for measuring the drapes, that's just plain silly. The old ones will do nicely in their new location.

Only a Repug would consider measuring for DRAPES.

32. It's perqs, or perks, and WTF are you whining about?
It's SOP for congresspersons in control to move to more accomodating quarters that will better serve their needs.

Bush's crack about sending his designer to measure for Pelosi's drapes was self-referential. He made a crack a couple of weeks back that Pelosi was already measuring for drapes but had no chance of winning. He trying to be self-effacing by saying he'd sent his designer over, but failed miserably.

Your gripe is meritless.

Oh, and it's actually "perqs" which is short for perquisites, those small and sometimes unnamed benefits that sometimes come with positions of power. Another acceptable spelling is "perks."

Yet that's what they were reduced to since the wingnuts took over. Is that all right with you? Were they humble enough, then? :eyes:

This is an issue of practicality and, by the way, we're not in a communist system. Not everything is shared equally - not that that ever described real-life communism.
