Moderals and Liberates - check in here....
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 03:08 PM by ourbluenation
I'm moderate on some things like gun law and death penalty, but liberal on other things like gay marriage and choice. A Moderal, or Liberate...whatever...all I know is there's a big D next to my name.

1. We cannot compromise rights, that means all the rights we have.
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 03:09 PM by originalpckelly
The only reason I am against the death penalty is the uncertainty associated with it. I've watched all these MSNBC shows about prisons, and it looks like hell on Earth. I think it is probably more humane to kill someone than to make them suffer on in prison.

But unfortunately we cannot guarantee guilt. We so have to look at reforming our system.

With the rights part, that includes the right to own firearms. I think gays ought to be given the equal protection of the law.

5. My issue with the DP is that I simply don't trust the government
I don't trust them with that kind of life and death situation.

9. I hear ya....
I really don't wanna get into a dp thing here, but, if someone chops up my kid and there's dna to prove the person did it without a shadow of a doubt, I simply don't want to breathe the same air as the perp. I was very anti DP before my darlins came along.

Anyways - my point of this thread was that there is no way in hell we can ever have everyone in the same party agree on everything. so then what?

10. Well work on things we do agree on
Like it seems the first issue the Pelosi House (God I love the sound of that) will take care of is raising the minimum wage. Almost all the Dems, even the Conservative ones, EVEN JOE LIEBERMAN agree on this issue.

And, with that kind of swell they could override Bush's veto. If played right, expect this to be the first Democratic Victory of the new Congress.

11. well - there's moderate views of the DP, right?
there's people who would have mentally retarded 17 year olds executed...that's not a moderate view. that's extreme. I'm for it it certain situations. not all. not none. moderate.

13. Strange that so many see DP as a black or white issue
It would be nice to see a Compassionate Death Penalty movement come about...

I've always liked the idea of death by Heroin overdose :)

14. I don't know how to categorize myself.
On many things, I'm one of the least moderate people that you'll ever meet. You should hear my rants on progressive taxation, or corporations, or religion in government. On other issues, I either don't have an opinion, or am not so absolute as many other people. I'm not against all wars, and I don't care that much about guns, and I hold no moral objection to capital punishment, though I do object on the grounds of cost--you could carry out nine life sentences for the price of one execution--and on the too-often occurrance of false convictions.

19. I'm liberal on most things
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 05:14 PM by mvd
Including, but not limited to:

War and peace (no war unless in complete self-defense)

Death penalty (no death penalty at all - used to be for it in some cases, but I found it to be more of an emotional thing. I'm morally against it, and the other reasons for opposing it also make sense to me.)

Taxes (high on richest people (over $200K a year,) kept under control for the middle class)

Welfare and unemployment benefits (our government must help keep people seeking work afloat)

Civil liberties (no Patriot Act or warrantless spying)

Environment (especially crucial to make changes with global warming happening!)

Stem cell research (I mean, why not?)

Drugs (legalize marijuana, even though I use no drugs)

Health Care (I believe the government should cover everyone - hopefully, for free)

I'm slightly moderate on:

Guns (I'm anti-gun, but believe in the right to own with certain restrictions: purchase limit per month and licensing added to the background check)

Affirmative Action (still needs to be a form of it)

Abortion (I'd like abortions to be as low as possible, but believe in choice)

Immigration (Must keep border secure, but I think amnesty in certain cases is a good idea)

Religion (I'm spiritual myself, and think religion has big problems, but think it can also be used for good. Also, I don't nick-pick on things like the Pledge.)

21. That would probably be all of us in some way or another.
On defense, I'd go a bit further than some others, but unlike the Bush clan, I'd do it right. I believe in 2nd amendment rights, assuming the person hasn't murdered anyone that way before. On other things, I'm totally liberal.

23. I Think I'm One of Those
I am liberal on some things & more moderate on others. I don't think anyone is 100% conservative or 100% liberal...well, the neocons & fundies are an exception to that, I guess. Anyway, I think the Democrats need to be careful & not make the mistake Bush did, which is to think we have a mandate. The message I got from the election is that the voters don't want *any* extremism, conservative or liberal. Considering what the country has been through the last few years, I guess I can't blame them. We have gotten a very strong example of what extremism is like with the Bush admin. It scared the *hell* out of me. I never want to experience it again.
