You think this new Congress truly represents the SEVENTY PERCENT of the American people who oppose the war on Iraq, and most other Bush policies?
Are you comfortable with Bushite corporations "counting" all our votes with TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code--code so secret that not even our secretaries of state are permitted to review it? Are you aware that this electronic voting coup was engineered by the biggest crooks in the Anthrax Congress, Tom Delay and Bob Ney--$3.9 billion to fast-track the conversion of our election system to NON-TRANSPARENT vote counting prior to the 2004 election?
And where do you get your confidence that Diebold/ES&S--the two corporations with very close ties to the Bush Junta, and to far rightwing causes, that "counted" 80% of the votes in the 2004 election, and have even more control today--didn't craft this new Congress, for their own purposes, starting way back in the primary elections?
There is NO reason for confidence that these, or any elections, conducted under these circumstance, truly reflect the will of the majority of Americans, and there are very good reasons to suspect otherwise. Virtually all of our political representatives have been elected under extremely non-transparent conditions. And, frankly, they are acting that way. The first thing that comes out of their mouths is "no impeachment"--of a president and vice president guilty of egregious crimes against this country and against humanity. SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE DEAD because of them. Thousands have been tortured. They have ripped up the Constitution. They have stolen our treasury and our future, with a $10 TRILLION deficit, from which the vice president's own company was stealing with both hands.
Now, I'll allow for political caginess and strategy--I do think wisdom is called for. But did they have to put it quite that way? "Impeachment is off the table." What about justice? What about truth? What about just the crimes we know about--mass death, torture, spying, the "unitary executive"? Doesn't saying "Impeachment is off the table" ENDORSE those crimes, by implication? Why not say, "We will not speculate on what the new Congress will do. We have barely had a day to discuss policy. We intend to hold the executive accountable for its actions, as the Constitution requires. Impeachment is only one tool for doing that. We cannot rule it out. It would UNCONSTITUTIONAL to rule it out."
I cannot deny that I feel joy at the Bushite fascists that have been thrown out of office, and the curtailment of the president's power that has already occurred. But I remain extremely skeptical of our election system, for damn good reasons--and no amount of ridicule can make me shut up about it. We continue to be in extraordinary danger, as a nation, with a non-transparent, corporate-controlled voting system. We are in danger of crippling compromise by the supposed political opposition. We are in danger of outright fascist coup. And I think we've seen both, as a direct consequence of this terrible transformation of our vote counting system into something we cannot see and cannot verify.
