Will 2008 be like 1932?
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 10:32 PM by roamer65
The Dems picked up 52 seats in the House in 1930, then went on gain another 97 seats when Roosevelt ran for President in 1932. I just have this feeling we could be heading towards another 1932. It all could depend on who we nominate for President. Any thoughts?

6. No
No, it will not be the same at all. Those election results came after the Great Depression, and Roosevelt and the rest of the New Dealers adopted a large chunk of the Socialist Party's platform (though of course they left out the bits about workers having democratic control over their workplaces, because they still represented big business). Workers were looking for an alternative to the system that lead them into disaster, and the Dems at the time pretended to be it (and took on the positions of those who actually were).

In this case, the Democrats won largely because they weren't the Republicans. In other words, they won by default, because of popular anger over the way things are going. People voted based on what they were against, not what they were for.

Welcome to DU!
Just for the record. We all voted for what we are for, not what we were against. Be careful with using that GOP talking point around here.

12. Things don't work that way
People voted for what they wanted, not just because they were angry about the situation. Democrats won in places they haven't won in ages and it's because the message was acceptable to voters everywhere.

2. As many close seats that didn't break the Democrats way...
I'd say another 30 or so could be possible? 90? That's just insane.

3. 97 changed hands in 1932, simply amazing. One can only hope...
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 10:37 PM by roamer65
...however, I personally think we could gain another 30-40 in 2008 if we do a decent job.

5. Not 90 without redistricting.
30 to 40, I'm not sure.

8. That depends on whether or not the US economy collapses between now and then..
and if it does whether the public blames Bush for it. Unemployment was almost 25% in 1932, remember, and Hoover and the Republicans were perceived as mishandling the Depression. I don't really think that kind of sweeping change is in the cards come 2008. Somewhere between 15 and 30 seats in the House and another 5 or so in the Senate would be a more realistic estimate.

FDR saved this country from disaster two times. The Great Depression and WW2.

13. I think so
I'm feeling a sea change. People are rejecting this insane freeper fundamentalism and corporate cheap labor conservatism. If we do right these next 2 years, this could be the beginning of another 50 year reign!!
