Okay, we won Congress. A lot of hard work was done by a lot of activists, bloggers and ordinary citizens to get us to where we are today, but to be honest we had a little help.
Hurricane Katrina.
That storm, and the Bush administration's totally inept response to it, illustrated to the American public the depths of Republican incompetence when faced with a crisis. And incompetence was the reason that voters ran away from the GOP in droves and delivered both houses of Congress into Democratic hands. People finally - finally - realized that the Big Bad Republicans could talk a good game, but when it came to walking the walk they didn't have a clue.
And that brings us to this point. Democrats will now take over chairmanships of every committee in Congress. They will be able to schedule hearings on just about anything they want, they will be able to compel testimony under oath, and they will be able to issue subpoenas for subjects who are hesitant to testify.
They should use all of these tools to the fullest extent possible.
