Webb dares mention the "C" word...
Class

as in economic disparity and injustice

He said it in his victory speech today, and later on CNN

1. Yes. It is a class war here at home and abroad, no doubt.

2. The Marine Corps, like the Navy's SEALs and submariners is egalitarian.
It's NOT a Marine Corps thing to leave the weak or wounded behind.

In the Marines, the SEALS and sub service, there is no such thing as being an individual, the collective is everything. It's even frowned upon for a submarine skipper to use the first person singular.

3. I don't get what you're saying. Webb isn't an individual
because he was in the Marines? I was giving him the benefit of smarts because he was in the Marines.

5. The collective means more than the individual.

The selfish individualism the right wing uses to justify economic Darwinism is alien to the military culture - particularly that of Webb's era during the draft.

I grew up under socialism: military housing in the draft era. I was really surprised that when you got outside of New London, CT and Norfolk, VA you found really really poor people and really really wealthy people. It was weird.

When I moved to Toronto for graduate school, there were three of us military kids in my program. We kind of hung together because we were surrounded by rich kids. Kids who 'summered' in Europe, etc. Our colleagues too.

7. I'm the wife of a retired military guy, so I might have some
understanding there. Bottom line, the military always sticks together. That could be the reason for me that Webb will do well, because he's been through so much, loves his country, and has decided this war is hell and it's time to go. I think so, too.
